Salary: $20.00 - $24.00 per hour

Under the supervision of the Swim Director or other assigned associate, the Swim Instructor is responsible for teaching swim lessons (in compliance with YMCA of the USA guidelines and levels), ensuring safety, and engaging participants during the swim lessons program.

• Responsible for safety of all swimmers during lessons and for the interpretation and enforcement of all pool rules.
• Reports to work in uniform at least ten minutes prior to assigned shift to receive communications and instructions from supervisor.
• Responsible for conducting classes according to the YMCA of the USA Aquatic Program, adapted where necessary for local conditions.
• Responsible for the efficiency of the lesson program through rigorous adherence to standards set for progression and honest evaluation of students' abilities.
• Responsible for attending all scheduled classes within a session; if an unavoidable absence occurs, secures a substitute and provides lesson plans for that substitute.
• Helps promote participation in the Y Swimming Lessons program.
• Assists the Swim Director or other assigned associate with administrative tasks.
• Prepares the program/service area with necessary equipment and returns all equipment to proper storage.
• Actively engages, orients, and assists all participants when not actively teaching.
• Focuses on quality experiences and engagement within programs, services, and activities.
• Promotes a professional image and maintains a clean and safe environment at all times.
• Works with a diverse population of all ages, genders, and sexual orientations.
• Attends and actively participates in all meetings as assigned.
• Incorporates the four character values of the YMCA:
  Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility, and adheres to the YCM Code of Conduct.
• Communicates the Y mission and objectives to the community.
• Assists in all other areas as assigned.

• Previous teaching experience preferred.
• Current CPR/AED/O₂/First Aid certification (O₂ within 30 days of hire).
• Preferred Lifeguard certification.
• Successful completion and passing of the Y in Central Maryland swim test.
• Flexible schedule for days, nights, and weekends.
• Completion of new associate training (including Child Abuse Prevention) before scheduled to work.

All Y associates agree to abide by The Code of Conduct with Youth that sets clear expectations for associates and volunteers to ensure a safe and respectful environment for young people. It emphasizes treating youth with respect and fairness, avoiding inappropriate physical or verbal interactions, and adhering to established standards of affection. The policy strictly prohibits any form of abuse, bullying, or harassment and mandates the reporting of suspected mistreatment.

Additionally, associates and volunteers must complete training on child abuse prevention and comply with legal reporting requirements to safeguard youth.
