- Deliver patient care through the nursing process (assessment, diagnosis, and patient outcome) in the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative phases of the surgical patient.
- Assess physiological and psychosocial health status, pain, and complete patient history.
- Verbally report pertinent information to appropriate staff and maintain continuity of care.
- Legibly document information in patient record and sign it using appropriate professional title.
- Establish nursing diagnoses, patient/family goals, and formulate plans of care.
- Implement nursing care plans tailored to patient and family needs.
- Respond to emergencies and practice within legal and ethical guidelines.
- Perform preoperative procedures: communication/report, case counting, aseptic technique, blood product handling, patient identification, surgical site verification.
- Demonstrate efficient turnover time and anticipate surgeon needs during procedures.
- Participate in a professional nursing organization.
- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
- Current Registered Nurse License.
- Current American Heart Association BLS, ACLS, and PALS certifications.
- Minimum six months of OR experience, with preference for individuals who can scrub and circulate.
- Demonstrates current, comprehensive professional knowledge and skills in conformance with recognized nursing standards and department policies.
- Assesses physiological and psychosocial health status of patient.
- Assesses pain per policy.
- Completes patient history.
- Legibly documents information in patient record and signs record using appropriate professional title.
- Investigates and resolves problems using critical thinking.
- Responds to emergencies.
- Practices within legal and ethical guidelines (Nurse Practice Act, legal statutes, ANA code for Nurses, PRMC Policy and Procedures).
- Performs nursing actions that demonstrate accountability (flexibility, safe judgment).
- Continually adjusts care plan based on patient/family data.
- Demonstrates proper preoperative processes, surgical site identification and marking, proper technique for obtaining blood products.
- Anticipates surgeon’s needs during the surgical procedure.
