Lead Telecommunications Engineer - Fiber Optic and Microwave (Hybrid)

- Lead the telecommunications team by managing day‑to‑day work and achieving targets.
- Long‑term planning (5‑10 years) to support lifecycle replacements of core transport and MPLS core communication network infrastructure.
- Short‑term planning for emergent projects, fiber expansion, new fiber routes, diversified fiber routes, microwave and network reliability and enhancement.
- Work with the Telecommunications Manager on strategy and growth.
- Mentor co‑op students, rotational engineers, new hires, and existing staff.
- Familiar with Eversource and industry communication design philosophy and guidelines.
- Participate in weekly project scheduling meetings to represent telecommunications engineering and provide feedback on project status and design due dates.
- Review project documentation, develop telecommunications scope of work, create network design and Bill of Materials (BOM), provide the “Issued For Construction” (IFC) design package, and review as‑built documents after completion.
- Approve communication designs with team members.
- Prepare conceptual designs and cost estimates for future projects.
- Act as point of contact for external engineering groups soliciting support or questions.
- Maintain familiarity with all issued designs to answer questions and address issues.
- Plan and develop network communications systems related to backbone infrastructure (transport/backhaul), including fiber builds, splicing, transport paths, fiber rings, multiplexers, utilization, RTU replacements, and microwave planning.
- Develop and own telecom engineering projects and lead them from start to completion.
- Work with Project Management to create business documentation for new projects.
- Configure OTN and IP network equipment, multiplexers, frame relay devices, and track regulatory & compliance requirements.
- Participate in site walks with other teams to determine scope of telecom work.
- Coordinate with equipment vendors to finalize product design application, solicit quotes, and place orders.
- Create high‑level diagrams in MS Visio for overall project scope.
- Create fiber projects and perform as‑built updates in the GIS tool (OSPInsight).
- Create and review detailed substation diagrams (wiring diagrams, cable schedules) in AutoCAD.
- Engineer design, review, and approval for all telecom projects and technical oversight of vendor‑completed work.
- Coordinate with Field Operations for equipment installation, troubleshooting, testing, and commissioning.
- Experience with telecom systems and requirements including private radio, private microwave, private fiber optic networks, teleprotection systems, power line carrier, or commercial wired & wireless communications services.
- Experience in OPGW and ADSS design considerations and code requirements in and around electric power space and associated installation materials and hardware.
- Working knowledge of SONET, TDM, MPLS, DWDM, and Ethernet technologies.
- Experience with:
- Computer network routing and switching.
- Specifying fiber optic equipment (e.g., S‑Mode OPGW, ADSS, OM‑3 duct cables, multiplexers, patch panels). Familiarity with protection and control schemes.
- Microwave system implementation, including FCC/FAA filings.
- Construction drawings and as‑built documents.
- Industry standards, safety standards, and existing electrical design codes, including electric utility practices, substation materials, and equipment.
- Demonstrate high personal initiative and the ability to interact with company personnel, contractors, and others positively.
- Excellent interpersonal, organizational, oral, and written communication skills.
- Physical ability to navigate in and around an electrical substation.
- Initiate and lead projects with minimal supervision.
