About the role – Head of Consumer Sciences and Product Intelligence (CSPI)
The head of CSPI is a critical enterprise leader for R&D, leading consumer‑first strategy across the organization. Working with category and OU teams, the role ensures that we create, develop, deliver and review our innovations and product portfolio to achieve consumer win and drive growth across Oral Health, OTC and Wellness.
Critical elements of the role are- Lead R&D consumer‑first strategy from early ethnography through product stories, prototype iteration, validation to consumer‑claim support and post‑launch reviews.
- Drive decisions that influence consumer choice, consumption and repeat, ensuring CSPI focuses on decisions that meaningfully influence behaviour and market outcomes.
- Lead decision‑led consumer and product intelligence to determine when and how testing, analytics or synthesis should be deployed.
- Drive a shared understanding of ideal product models and provide guidance on product attributes that deliver meaningful and noticeable superiority.
- Be a key driver of superior product sensorials & experience, using expertise in flavour, fragrance, taste masking, foaming and product feel.
- Create and execute the product intelligence strategy, delivering systematic intelligence of the product landscape for each category.
- Lead a global CSPI team, driving world‑class capabilities, talent strategy and capability evolution.
- Combine consumer, product, evidence, complaints and market data into unified R&D insights to drive superiority.
- Drive clear understanding of drivers of trial, consumption and repeat, helping increase product usage.
- Lead foundational consumer research to better understand JTBD, unmet needs, usage occasions and experience gaps.
- Deliver consumer sciences across the stage‑and‑gate innovation process with disciplined product stories and ideal models.
- Develop and lead a CSPI capability that enables appropriate testing methodologies throughout the innovation and development process.
- Conduct post‑launch reviews of products, monitor complaints and act on insights to improve products.
- Partner with relevant teams to ensure regulatory adherence for consumer research.
- Advance objective understanding and continuous benchmarking of the product marketplace against leading and emerging competitors.
- Build systematic, data‑first understanding of product comparisons to inform superiority.
- Help teams identify addressable gaps within portfolios.
- Create a talent strategy for global CSPI to lead consumer science methodologies and capabilities.
- Drive engagement of the CSPI team, ensuring a magnet for industry talent.
- Act as an enterprise leader for R&D, maintaining the voice of the consumer.
- Serve as a thought partner to Category and OU leadership to prioritize priorities, shape early opportunities and avoid low‑value projects.
- Mandatory: BSc degree or equivalent in an appropriate subject.
- Greater than 10 years of industry experience within a large FMCG / CPG business in an associated function.
- Business Leadership – connect consumer sciences and product intelligence to tangible business outcomes and growth.
- People Leadership – deliver through others across a global network.
- Team Leadership – drive a highly engaged global team through remote management.
- Experience managing multiple priorities and categories, converting complexity into simple actions.
- Expertise in novel consumer sciences methodologies, generating actionable knowledge.
- Ability to lead evidence that informs product, portfolio and communication decisions, emphasizing the consumer.
- High data capability – understand and use the latest techniques for data‑led decisions.
