Under the direction of the supervisor, performs specimen processing, customer services, and non–technical duties in the General Laboratory.

Essential Functions

Receives, logs-in, and assigns computer accession numbers to specimens from nursing floors, outpatient drawing sites, and off–site locations, including verifying labels, entering data into LIS, and handling un-barcoded specimens.

Prepares specimens according to specific Reference Laboratory requirements
, including centrifuging, separating, and transmitting reports to reference labs.

Maintains work area — cleaning, restocking supplies, and notifying supervisors of low stock.

Scans reference laboratory results into the LIS within 24 hours of receipt.

Reviews outstanding specimen reports for send–out tests and follows up on overdue results.

Transports specimens to laboratory sections, ensuring proper handling and timely delivery.

Registers all specimens brought directly to the lab using the LIS, ensuring accuracy.

Answers phones and provides reports to nursing floors, physicians, and offsite facilities, ensuring clear communication.

Generates and distributes laboratory reports
, including faxing external inquiry reports.

Records daily temperatures of refrigerators and freezers, notifying supervisors if out of range.

Adheres to safety policies including PPE use, proper waste disposal, and maintaining a safe environment.

Assists in training new employees under supervisor guidance.

Receptive to technological changes and improvements in work processes.

Fosters a "Culture of Safety" by following policies and knowing safety officers.

Enters 'add-on' test requests and orders redraws if necessary.

Reports to work on schedule and adheres to work hours unless approved otherwise.

Job Requirements

Minimum Education: Equivalent of four years of high school education.
Minimum

Work Experience:

Up to three months to become proficient.
Preferred Certification: MLA - Medical Laboratory Assistant (ASCP or AMT)
