At South Shore Hospital, neurosurgery patients are cared for on Pratt 6 North. The unit is equipped for complex spinal and cranial surgery and is the only Level II trauma center in southeast Massachusetts.

Pratt 6 North patients require round-the-clock monitoring and quick assessment and action for critical neuro-related conditions.

• Care for patients with neurological conditions and injuries (stroke, brain/spinal tumors, head trauma, hydrocephalus, degenerative spine disorders, chronic pain, and related procedures).
• Provide nursing care on a unit that performs complex spinal and cranial surgery where every second counts.
• Adhere to SSH medication administration policies, including transcribing, recording, reconciliation, narcotic counts, and discrepancy resolution.

• 1. Registered Nurse license from an accredited nursing program.
• 2. ACLS certification (must obtain within 6 months of hire if not already obtained).
• 3. At least 6 months of experience as an acute care, bedside RN (new grads with no experience may apply to SSH’s new grad program).
• 4. At least 6 months of telemetry experience (including rhythm interpretation).
• 5. TCAR R (Trauma Care After Resuscitation) certification (must obtain within 6 months of hire if not already obtained).
• 6. ERT (Emergency Response Training) certification (must obtain within 6 months of hire if not already obtained).

• Previous neurosurgery experience in an acute inpatient setting.
• Experience with the Epic healthcare system.
• Experience with the following treatments or equipment: brain/spinal surgery recovery, ventriculoperitoneal shunts, stereotactic radiation therapy, spinal cord stimulation for chronic pain, intrathecal baclofen pump for muscle spasticity.

• Medication administration: demonstrates knowledge of SSH policies for administering, transcribing, and recording medications; completes medication reconciliation; documents narcotic administration, verifies counts, and resolves discrepancies.
