This Planning and Estimating Engineer role is with an established precision engineering business in Weymouth, working across a wide range of customer projects and manufacturing processes. The Planning and Estimating Engineer will review technical drawings, assess customer requirements, estimate manufacturing costs and create practical routings to support efficient production. This Planning and Estimating Engineer position would suit someone with strong machining knowledge who can interpret drawings, understand manufacturing methods and communicate clearly across internal teams.
The Planning and Estimating Engineer roleAs Planning and Estimating Engineer
, you’ll sit between customer requirements, quotation activity and production planning. The role needs someone who can look at a drawing, understand how the part should be made, assess the likely machining or fabrication route, and provide realistic estimating information for the business.
Previous planning or estimating experience would be useful, but strong practical machining knowledge is the key requirement. This Planning and Estimating Engineer role could suit an experienced Estimator or Planner, but could also suit someone from a CNC, manual machining or production engineering background who wants to move into a more technical office-based role.
Day-to-day responsibilities of a Planning and Estimating Engineer- Review customer drawings, specifications and technical requirements
- Assess manufacturability, process requirements and potential production routes
- Prepare accurate cost estimates for components and assemblies
- Plan manufacturing routings across machining, fabrication and related processes
- Work with production teams to confirm practical methods, timings and requirements
- Support quotation activity with accurate technical and cost information
- Liaise with internal departments to resolve drawing, material or process questions
- Help ensure estimates and routings are realistic, efficient and aligned to capability
Support customer requirements from initial enquiry through to production handover - Maintain accurate planning and estimating information for future reference

- Strong understanding of machining processes and general precision engineering methods
- Able to read and interpret engineering drawings and technical specifications
- Experience in estimating, planning, routing or manufacturing engineering would be useful
- Confident discussing technical requirements with internal teams

- Practical, detail-focused approach to assessing how work should be manufactured
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced engineering environment with varied customer requirements
- Willingness to learn and develop further where training is needed
