CCSD 89 is seeking a 1:1 Bilingual (English/Spanish) Aide at Westfield Elementary School for the school year. In this position one will assist an assigned student with instruction in general daily classroom activities as assigned by teaching staff. This person is responsible for monitoring the academic and behavioral performances of their assigned student. The Instructional Aide (or Paraprofessional) works under the direct supervision of an assigned teacher.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Makes decisions and demonstrates leadership that supports the mission, vision, goals, and interests of the district and of students. Communicates, collaborates, and cooperates with colleagues, supervisors, staff, and students.
- Assists teacher in maintaining student discipline and with classroom instruction. May escort children to and from various instructional areas or rooms.
- Assists with set up of classroom and prepares materials for specialized instructional units. Coordinates the use audio-visual equipment and computers for the classroom.
- Handles reports and related clerical functions with the teacher including daily attendance and student assessment of academic or behavioral progress. Keeps daily logs of student behavior and learning as directed by the classroom teacher.
- Prepares and/or assists with various curricula, such as physical education, as directed. Evaluates student performance under the supervision of the classroom teacher.
- Tutor students individually or in small groups to reinforce and follow up learning activity.
- Serves as a source of information and help to any substitute teacher.
- Participates in in-service training programs as assigned.
- Advises the classroom teacher or principal immediately of the existence of any problems deemed to warrant prompt attention, advice, or intervention.
- Performs special assignments and other duties as determined by the classroom teacher or school administration.
- Completion of requirements for a high school diploma. A college or university degree is preferred.
- Paraprofessional Certification including completion of a minimum of 60 semester hours of college or university credit and a Letter of Approval from the Regional Office of Education.
- Demonstrated aptitude for the work to be performed.
- Experience with the supervision of children in group settings. Previous work in childcare is preferred.
- Experience with Apple computer systems and office production software.
- All applicants for this position are required to meet Illinois requirements for aides, holding an ELS (PARA) license or SUB license.
- Ability to read, interpret, and write written and verbal information; write professional correspondence and routine reports; speak effectively with general public and staff.
- Ability to calculate figures and amounts using basic mathematics concepts of general mathematics and algebra related to school district information.
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form; deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
- Ability to operate a computer and related software in an Apple environment.
- Ability to complete assigned tasks in a timely manner and communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing with time constraints.
- Keyboarding or word processing speed test must be passed at 30 words per minute without error.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the school community.
- Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.
