Job Description

0.03 FTE, Hours/

Schedule:

In‑House Registry (IHR) covering PTO, leave, or schedule gaps. Expect 192 hours per year, including four weekend days per quarter and two holidays. Weekday availability may also be required.

As a Speech‑Language Pathologist, you will support Northwestern Medicine’s mission, vision, and values, comply with the Code of Ethics, and uphold all relevant policies and regulatory standards.

Key responsibilities include direct patient care, teaching, committee participation, and departmental process improvement.

Serves as a role model for all therapists and clinical interns in professional, clinical, communication, education, and leadership activities.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate the four NM values of teamwork, patients first, integrity, and excellence in daily work and interactions.
  • Present a friendly, approachable, professional demeanor and appearance.
  • Provide accurate information and timely updates to patients and customers.
  • Use effective service‑recovery skills to solve problems or service breakdowns when they occur.
  • Maintain primary responsibility over patient plan of care through timely and consistent collaboration with treating ST/STA.
  • Demonstrate teamwork by helping co‑workers within and across departments and communicating respectfully.
  • Use organizational and unit/department resources efficiently.
  • Manage work schedule efficiently, completing tasks and assignments on time.
  • Contribute to opportunities and processes for continuous improvement.
  • Participate in efforts to reduce costs, streamline work processes, and improve services.
  • Apply creative problem‑solving and adapt treatment to special circumstances as evidenced by team feedback and documentation.
  • Perform appropriate evaluations, use treatment modalities, equipment, and protocols, performing re‑evaluations per department guidelines.
  • Assume responsibility for patient management throughout the continuum of care, documenting in EMR.
  • Adhere to department policy regarding evaluations, progress notes, and discharge summaries; all notes are documented in EMR.
  • Complete daily notes reflecting patient response, performance, and assessment, meeting regulatory documentation requirements.
  • Provide educational materials and methods appropriate to the patient’s level of understanding and motivation.
  • Participate in committees, department processes, and special projects.
  • Develop and maintain professional relationships with healthcare team members and participate in internal and external marketing.
  • Create a culture of respectful communication through listening, open conversation, and timely acknowledgement of contributions.
  • Accept constructive feedback and make timely changes as evidenced by coaching forms and team feedback.
  • Proactively complete non‑patient care responsibilities within established timelines.
  • Contribute to educational efforts such as in‑services, journal clubs, new hire orientation, and PI.
  • Actively participate in student clinical or observation programs as an instructor, mentor, or host.
  • Maintain productivity standards and complete all required education, competencies, and training within required time frames.
  • Demonstrate willingness to flex schedule or assignment to meet patient care needs and department meetings outside normal hours.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Master’s Degree in Speech‑Language Pathology.
  • Speech Pathologist License in the State of Illinois.
  • BLS certification from the American Heart Association upon hire.

Preferred:

  • Current certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) in Speech‑Language Pathology, or eligibility following completion of the Clinical Fellowship year.
