Rehab Nurse Tech Stroke Unit Full Time 8 Hour Nights Sign On Bonus Offered
Job Description: 0.9 FTE, 8‑hour shifts, $4,000 sign‑on bonus (eligible only to approved internal transfers and rehires). One East/West is a forty‑bed stroke rehabilitation unit staffed by physicians, nurses, therapists, psychologists, dietitians and chaplains. The Marianjoy Stroke Program is joint commission‑certified in disease‑specific stroke rehabilitation. The unit focuses on multidisciplinary, individualized care plans to address the physical, emotional and behavioral changes patients may experience, with the goal of returning patients to their families and communities.
The Rehab Nurse Tech‑MJ (RNT) role reflects Northwestern Medicine’s mission, vision and values and complies with all relevant policies and regulations. The RNT develops expertise in the specific needs of rehabilitation patients, including chronic conditions and disabilities, and serves as a key member of the interdisciplinary team. Under the direction of a registered nurse, the RNT assists patients with activities of daily living, mobility skills, skin, bowel and bladder programs, maintains a clean and safe environment, and performs technical skills such as de‑escalation techniques and 12‑lead EKG monitoring.
The RNT also participates in unit quality projects, data collection, equipment inventory and maintenance, and serves as a preceptor for new PCTs.
- Answer and triage patient call lights with an appropriate sense of urgency.
- Assist patients with personal hygiene and activities of daily living, promoting maximal independence.
- Assist patients with application of assistive devices, prosthetics and orthoses according to individual patient programs.
- Perform preventive skin‑care program as directed by RN and report any changes in skin integrity immediately.
- Accurately calculate and document calorie counts, intake and output and patient weights.
- Assist patients with transfers and mobility activities using appropriate techniques, precautions and assistive devices.
- Assist patients with bladder and bowel elimination programs, including collection of laboratory specimens and straight catheterization for select populations under RN direction.
- Accurately record patient vital signs and communicate any concerns to the registered nurse.
- Measure and document blood glucose levels.
- Perform 12‑lead EKG as ordered.
- Assist patients with completing menus daily within established time frames.
- Pass patient meal trays and hand‑hold snacks under nurse direction.
- Provide supervision and activities for patients at high risk of falling.
- Patient rounding: circulate on the nursing unit to monitor patients.
- Provide de‑escalation techniques for agitated and aggressive patient behaviors.
- Engage patients in appropriate activities.
- Act as unit mobility champion.
- Maintain and organize unit equipment inventories.
- Preceptor new employees.
- Perform all other duties assigned by nurse manager, nurse supervisor, staff nurse or charge nurse.
- Participate in system and local quality improvement goals.
- Collect data and audit for Joint Commission readiness and improvement projects.
- Assist in maintaining unit readiness to meet regulatory standards.
- Maintain a therapeutic relationship to provide optimal customer‑focused care.
- Communicate effectively with patients at an appropriate level for age and cognitive status, showing cultural sensitivity.
- Interact effectively with peers and other hospital staff to foster positive working relationships.
- Triage patient concerns to RN effectively.
- Contribute to the safe, effective and professional delivery of patient care, including use of safety/restrictive devices.
- Follow Infection Control policies and procedures.
- Maintain knowledge of Marianjoy’s policies concerning precautions, codes, conditions, warning and general safety procedures.
- Rotate to all units based on patient care needs.
- Adjust to changes in policy and procedure, unit and patient population.
