Job Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Med/Surg night shift position in an acute care setting requiring a WV or compact license and strong post-op experience.
Responsibilities- Position is based on a 52-bed Med/Surg unit in an acute care hospital
- Typical patient population includes ortho and neuro post-ops, general post-ops, and complex medical cases such as COPD, pneumonia, and cellulitis
- Patient ratio is typically 1:6-7 on both day and night shifts
- 12-hour night shifts with schedules made in 6-week blocks; required to work every other weekend (3 weekends in 6 weeks)
- Holiday shifts assigned via rotation
- Remote telemetry used as needed; no requirement to read strips but helpful if experienced
- Unit uses Allscripts/Sunrise EMR
- Floating may occur to other Med/Surg or Oncology units; potential to float to IMC for Med/Surg overflow only
- Unit has full-time hospitalist, 24/7 IV and respiratory therapy teams, and on-site pharmacy
- Daily responsibilities include managing a variety of post-op and medical patients with support from a charge nurse, CNAs, and clinical assistants
- Heparin drips and select infusions may be managed; no cardiac drips or continuous Lasix
- Ventilator support limited to BiPAP (intermittent), CPAP, and high flow
- IVs are started by a dedicated IV team; RNs are responsible for IV site assessments
- Two full unit orientation shifts provided following hospital orientation
- Navy blue scrubs required for RNs, no hoodies allowed
- Requires participation in holiday scheduling and adherence to facility RTO request policy
- First-time travelers are welcome to apply
- Active WV or compact RN license required at time of consideration
- Minimum of 2 years Med/Surg RN experience
- Current BLS (AHA) and NIHSS certifications required
- Experience caring for post-op orthopedic, neuro, and general surgery patients required
- Experience with peritoneal dialysis highly preferred
- Must provide a copy of an unexpired driver’s license
- Candidates must live at least 50 miles from the facility—no local travelers permitted
- If previously employed at any WVU Medicine location, a 2-year break is required before reapplying
- Cumulative travel contracts at WVU health system may not exceed one year at a time, requiring a 2-year break after one year
