Job Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Stepdown (IMU) unit with night shifts and advanced cardiac care skills.

Responsibilities
  • Work in a 30-bed Intermediate Care Unit (Stepdown) within an acute care hospital
  • Deliver care to patients with acute cardiac and medical conditions, including chest pain, CHF, arrhythmias, post-pacer, pre/post caths, and Tikosyn therapy
  • Patient ratios are typically 1:5, with occasional assignments up to 1:6
  • Work 12-hour night shifts (7p-7a) in blocks, including required weekends and potential holidays
  • Floating as needed to Telemetry or Med Surg units, with occasional assignments to a Pandemic Unit and possible ratios up to 1:6 in these units
  • Utilizes Sunrise (Allscripts) EMR and Nihon Kohden telemonitoring equipment; RNs must interpret their own telemetry strips
  • RNs are expected to titrate cardiac drips such as Amiodarone, Cardizem, Dopamine, Dobutamine, Labetalol, Nitro, and Heparin
  • Must wear navy blue scrubs and scrub jackets (no hoodies)
  • Self-scheduling permitted with up to 4 requested days off per month
  • Care is supported by charge nurses (who also have full assignments), clinical assistants, and several CNAs per shift
  • IV team and respiratory therapy are in-house 24/7 and manage associated procedures
  • Hospitalists are in-house 24/7, with intensivist backup available
  • Travelers must be flexible with holiday coverage, though typically perm staff cover most holidays
  • If previously employed at any facility within the same health system, a minimum 2-year break is required before returning as a traveler, and travelers may not exceed 1 year of cumulative contract time within the health system without a subsequent 2-year break
Requirements
  • Active WV or Compact RN license
  • Minimum of 2 years stepdown or intermediate care experience
  • Current BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS certifications required
  • Must be able to interpret telemetry strips and titrate cardiac drips
  • Pass/fail EKG testing may be required
  • Must live at least 50 miles from facility (no local travelers)
  • Orientation includes one partial day with HR and up to two days on the unit with a preceptor
