Pediatric Critical Care Physician

Children in crisis need a physician who can steady a room, read a deteriorating course early, and turn a complex plan into a safe outcome. In this role you lead resuscitation and longitudinal critical care for infants, children, and adolescents, partnering with families and a multidisciplinary team when every hour matters. Success is measured in lives stabilized, complications prevented, and families who leave knowing what happened and what comes next.

Performance

Objectives
  • Direct care for a high-acuity pediatric ICU census, achieving timely stabilization and evidence-based management of respiratory failure, shock, sepsis, neurologic injury, and post-operative critical illness.
  • Lead resuscitations and rapid responses so that first interventions, airway decisions, and escalation occur within unit standards and are clearly documented.
  • Reduce preventable harm by owning daily safety goals: ventilator-associated events, catheter infections, medication errors, and unplanned extubations.
  • Run family-centered rounds that produce a shared daily plan, clear contingency orders, and documented goals of care, including complex and end-of-life decisions.
  • Coordinate transport, admission, and step-down handoffs so no critical detail is lost between referring clinicians, the ICU, and receiving teams.
  • Teach residents, fellows, and advanced practice clinicians at the bedside and close at least one practice gap each quarter with a measurable improvement.
  • Contribute to unit quality work-protocols, morbidity review, or a focused improvement project-with results reported to leadership.
Environment & Resources

You practice in a dedicated pediatric intensive care setting with 24/7 intensivist coverage, respiratory therapy, pharmacy, nutrition, and pediatric subspecialty backup. The role includes protected time for documentation and quality work, access to a modern EHR and evidence resources, and a defined medical director or division chief as your reporting line. Advanced practice clinicians and a full nursing team extend your capacity so you can focus on the sickest patients and on decisions only a physician should own.

Essential

Qualifications
  • MD or DO and board certification or eligibility in Pediatric Critical Care Medicine.
  • Active, unrestricted medical license (or eligibility) and current PALS; procedural competence in pediatric airway, vascular access, and resuscitation.
  • Demonstrated independent management of a mixed medical-surgical PICU, including ventilators, shock, and multi-organ failure.
  • Clear communication under pressure with families, nurses, and consulting services.
  • Commitment to safety culture, just culture reporting, and teaching learners in a high-acuity unit.
Role Selling Points
  • True critical-care scope: you lead the sickest children, not only cover a shift.
  • Team model that pairs physician judgment with strong nursing and APP support.
  • Visible impact through quality work tied to outcomes you can see on the unit.
  • A placement built around fit-schedule, acuity, and teaching-not a generic posting.
