Position Summary:
Under the general direction of the Director/Assistant of Pharmacy Services, the Pharmacy coordinator - controlled substance and sterile products provides comprehensive pharmaceutical care and collaborates with the pharmacy and nursing teams. The coordinator will primarily be involved in providing clinical/dispensing/regulatory guidance for controlled substance and sterile product practices, including establishing new workflow, implementing quality assurance, record keeping and equipment maintenance for the IV room and C11 safe.
The Manager will provide IV Pharmacist’s duties as needed. The Pharmacy coordinator - controlled substance and sterile products demonstrates leadership/management skills and a commitment to customer service, professional accountability and growth.
- Understands and adheres to the WPH Performance Standards, Policies and Behaviors.
- Understands and adheres to all state and federal regulations related to controlled substance receiving, storage, dispensing, record keeping, monitoring and tracking.
- Understands and adheres to all state and federal regulations regarding the preparation, stability and sterility dating, dispensing, record keeping, compliance of environmental controls and maintenance of sterile products preparation areas and preparations, including equipment and devices.
- Assures the delivery of quality department/clinical services in accordance with established hospital and regulatory/accreditation agency standards.
- Is responsible and accountable for the overall operations of the IV area and C11 safe, including development of area goals and objectives that are consistent with the hospital mission, management of personnel, preparing/monitoring aseptic technique, quality assurance and Joint Commission and regulatory standards for all procedures and equipment use.
- Creates, revises and monitors compliance to policies regarding IV and Controlled substance services as the process demands and policies describe.
- Provides staffing duties daily.
- Oversee and supervise the Cancer Center Pharmacy in the absence of the department Manager.
- Prepares and oversees the preparation of sterile products safely and trains and monitors compliance with standards of operation in the area including management of hazardous drugs/spills. Monitors compliance with hazardous products according to Industry standards.
- Collaborates with physicians and other health care team members to assure the delivery of optimum patient care.
- Assures that employee competency and education requirements are satisfied as per hospital policy.
- As required, participates in the Performance Improvement Program as defined by the organization.
- Participates in committees, task forces and projects as appropriate.
- Ensures a safe employee environment.
- Provides data and workflow feedback to assist interdisciplinary team with achieving goals of opioid stewardship program.
- Participates in the hospital’s drug diversion program.
- Develops metrics to measure safe and effective opioid/analgesic management in the hospital.
- Maintains knowledge related to the operations of sterile products and equipment and maintenance of the areas.
- Works collaboratively with all levels of the hospital interdisciplinary team and promotes the team concept within Pharmacy department, Physician practices and hospital wide.
- Demonstrates positive customer service, fosters positive employee relations.
- Supports hospital initiatives and projects and acts as a positive change agent.
- Promotes a positive and professional image and serves as a role model, coach, mentor and resource for staff and peers; demonstrates excellent interpersonal skills.
- Performs all other related duties as assigned.
- Graduate from an accredited school of Pharmacy with a minimum of a BS in Pharmacy.
- Current New York License and registration.
- 2-3 years hospital sterile products management experience preferred.
- Minimum five years recent experience as a Pharmacist in an acute hospital setting.
