Position Summary
The Phlebotomy Associate is an entry‑level position designed for individuals who are new to the field of phlebotomy. Under the direct supervision of a certified phlebotomist, the Phlebotomy Associate will learn the essential skills and protocols for collecting blood samples from patients in a variety of clinical settings. This role involves obtaining blood specimens for laboratory analysis while observing the protocols and methods established by the Department of Laboratories, including the accessioning routine for proper identification and processing of such specimens.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities- Understands and adheres to the WPH Performance Standards, Policies and Behaviors.
- Demonstrates knowledge of department and hospital policies and procedures and their execution.
- Works a flexible schedule to allow exposure to different shifts and patient populations.
- Observes and learns from the primary assigned phlebotomist.
- Attends staff meetings and in‑services.
- Completes competency requirements.
- Maintains a safe environment and uses universal precautions.
- Obtains blood or other specimens using varied techniques.
- Is proficient in the use of the laboratory information system and hospital information system (where applicable).
- Maintains supplies in a neat and orderly manner.
- Maintains a professional appearance and attitude.
- Makes appropriate decisions independently.
- Prioritizes workload.
- Informs management of problems.
- Maintains confidentiality of patient data.
- Cross‑trains in PSTC, MLW, Phlebotomy/Specimen Management.
- Performs all other duties as assigned.
- High‑school graduate or GED required.
- Completed Phlebotomy Certification Program required (WCC).
- Basic computer skills.
- Previous experience in a healthcare environment.

- May be exposed to chemicals necessary for required tasks. All hazardous chemicals are listed in the hospital’s SDS database and can be accessed through the intranet (Employee Tools/SDS Access).
- Can move about the department and multiple patient locations frequently throughout the workday.
- Has excellent eye‑hand coordination and dexterity needed to perform venipunctures.
- Can detect and greet patients.
- Communicates frequently with patients who may have questions and provides accurate information.
