Position Summary
  • Clinical leadership to ensure safe patient care through coordination and collaboration with department staff and leaders.
  • Responsible for patient flow and efficiency metrics, proactively supporting throughput and assuring delivery of quality department/clinical services in accordance with hospital and regulatory/accreditation standards, especially during off‑shift.
  • Knowledgeable about all units and the type of patients, equipment, and medications each unit can accept and provide.
  • Works independently and thinks critically to handle a multitude of scenarios.
  • Demonstrates excellent customer service skills, collaborates with all departments, and upholds hospital behavioral standards.
  • Maintains knowledge of hospital, nursing department operations, and strategic plans.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
  • Responsible for patient throughput across all clinical areas, focusing on Emergency Department, PACU, and Cardiac Cath Lab, to achieve hospital strategic goals.
  • Oversee patient care for all admitted patients waiting for a bed, including:
    • Verifying correct admission orders in EPIC‑Grand Central and tracking gaps.
    • Face‑to‑face rounding on all admitted patients awaiting a bed.
    • Ensuring staffing coverage for hold patients in outpatient beds.
    • Oversight of the care team assigned to holds (rounding, break coverage, etc.).
  • Supports facilitation and coordination of CAMS procedural and non‑procedural area emergency response.
  • EPIC‑Grand Central super user.
  • Supports throughput metrics and current hospital goal.
  • Daily morning review of all blocked beds, ensuring appropriateness and cohorting patients where suitable.
  • Supervises all services (patient‑related and others) to provide safe, efficient, quality care and collaborates with NM/ANM to resolve clinical practice and personal issues on off‑shifts.
  • Assists staff in understanding the rationale behind hospital/nursing policies and procedures.
  • Provides clinical/technical support to staff.
  • Assures appropriate staffing levels on assigned shift and subsequent shift in collaboration with Nurse Manager/Director of Nursing, scheduling staff based on budgeted staffing plans and department needs.
  • Ensures compliance with state regulations and accreditation standards.
  • Attends and participates in educational programs or activities to maintain current knowledge or expertise.
  • Participates in shared governance councils/taskforces as required to support the Magnet Culture.
  • Adheres to safety standards for employees and patients.
  • Submits all other work reports as required/requested by the Nurse Manager/Division Administrator.
  • Collaborates with admitting to place patients correctly by reviewing EPIC‑Grand Central bed requests.
  • Maintains prompt, ongoing, effective communication with charge nurses/managers regarding unit admission, transfers, or discharge issues.
  • Routine walking rounds to collaborate with NM/ANM, identify available beds, and improve throughput.
  • Promotes fiscal responsibility by reviewing requests for constant observation and supervision at initiation and performing face‑to‑face rounds to ensure they remain indicated.
  • Responds to all off‑shift codes (RRT, Code Blue, heart stat, etc.) and supports staff and rapid transport of patients to appropriate levels of care.
  • Attends fire bells 24/7.
  • Performs all other related duties as assigned.
Education & Experience Requirements
  • Graduate from an accredited school of nursing with current New York registration.
  • BSN required.
  • Knowledge of current nursing, medical, and health trends and practices in patient care.
  • CPR/ACLS/PALS certification required.
  • Minimum five years recent clinical nursing experience in an acute hospital.
