Position: Staff Nurse, Day Surgery * Internal Only*

Staff Nurse, Day Surgery (Internal Only)

Internal only – North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust. Band 5, 36 hours per week, fixed term 12 months, day case unit. Closing date 13 July 2026.

Job Summary

Provide safe and efficient care to surgical patients in a nurse‑led day case unit. Responsibilities include admission, discharge planning, and ongoing care for a small group of patients within each shift. Work 12‑hour day shifts (07:30–20:00, with future plans to finish 22:00) across 20 beds, seven days a week.

Responsibilities
  • Work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Assist with admissions and discharge planning of patients during each shift.
  • Access, plan, implement and evaluate individual patient care needs.
  • Support operative and post‑operative care within the day case setting.
  • Help maintain a safe, clean, and efficient unit environment.
Requirements
  • Currently employed at NCIC (Internal Only).
  • Band 5 staff nurse, registered nurse with active NMC registration.
  • Positive, flexible, and reliable approach to work.
Person Specification Knowledge and Experience
  • Student nurse or general nursing experience within the NHS or equivalent.
  • Continuing professional development with portfolio.
  • Knowledge of NMC code of professional conduct.
  • Understanding of equality and best practice issues.
  • Relevant field of nursing for medical speciality and local PCPI agenda.
  • Experience supporting students.
Qualifications
  • Registered nurse with active registration.
  • Teaching certificate or equivalent (preferred).
Skills and Aptitudes
  • Ability to work as part of a team without close supervision.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong organisational skills.
  • Demonstrate compassionate values and behaviours for dignified care.
  • Basic IT skills.
Other Requirements
  • Flexibility to work varying shifts.
  • Willingness to develop within the role.
