We are seeking a Shelter Worker to provide 24/7 support to homeless and street‑involved adults at 405 Alexander (Whitehorse Emergency Shelter). The role ensures the safety, well‑being, and dignity of shelter users while delivering person‑centered, trauma‑informed, housing‑focused and culturally appropriate services.
Location & HoursWhitehorse, Yukon
We are hiring for two lines: 37.5 hours per week (Saturday – Monday, 19:00‑07:30) and 25 hours per week (Monday & Wednesday, 19:00‑07:30).
Compensation & Benefits- Starting wage $34.08 per hour, increasing every 2,000 hours.

- Reports to the Program Manager or designate.
- Collaborates with Connective Services Team, staff, volunteers, and community partners.
- Works with outreach workers and multiple agencies for service integration.
- Provide 24/7 emergency shelter services, ensuring a minimum of 24 dormitory beds and up to 30 overflow beds are available nightly.
- Maintain a safe and welcoming environment for shelter users and monitor targeted spaces.
- Ensure adherence to shelter policies, including harm reduction and overdose response protocols.
- Assist with basic needs (food, clothing, sanitation, health care).
- Conduct intake assessments within 72 hours and complete them within one week.
- Develop and support case plans, focusing on housing‑first principles.
- Provide life‑skills resources, harm reduction supplies, and education.
- Build supportive relationships and connections to family, friends, and community.
- Refer to appropriate community services and collaborate with outreach workers.
- Maintain relationships with partners such as RCC, CYFN, Downtown Outreach Clinic, MWSUS, Bloodties, Safe at Home, FASSY, and others.
- Collaborate with Yukon First Nations and cultural organizations to provide culturally safe services.
- Monitor and respond to safety concerns, intoxication, and disruptive behavior.
- Follow incident reporting matrix and emergency response protocols.
- Maintain records, case notes, and submit daily/nightly statistics and reports.
- Participate in quarterly/monthly progress reports and program evaluation initiatives.
- Minimum one year working with vulnerable populations.
- Knowledge of housing‑first principles and harm reduction approaches.
- Ability to respond well in crisis situations.
- Extensive knowledge of community resources.
- WHMIS, Naloxone training, non‑violent crisis intervention and de‑escalation, trauma‑informed and harm reduction training (preferred).
- Excellent written and verbal communication in English.
- Knowledge of Yukon First Nations culture and history (preferred).
- RCMP Vulnerable Sector Check.
- TB Screening.
- Work in a culturally safe and gender‑affirming manner.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Current Emergency First Aid Certificate.
