Job Summary and Requirements

This posting will be used to fill 1 full‑time term position for 10 months. Restricted to Canadian Indigenous ancestry. Preference to Yukon First Nation ancestry.

Who We Are

The Department of Justice is working to ensure Yukon remains a safe, secure, and healthy place to live and work. We build strong and healthy relationships with others to support good governance and to foster safe communities with opportunities for healing. The Department of Justice provides supportive and dynamic work environments comprised of teams of professionals who are committed to making a difference in the lives of Yukoners.

Your

Role

Victim Service Workers support individuals and families who have been impacted by crime. We help people navigate the criminal legal system, understand their rights as victims within it, and provide advocacy, short‑term counseling, information, safety planning, and help accessing community supports and services. We help people apply for protective orders, and may help them navigate times of emergency and crisis. We strive to work in a compassionate, client‑centered, and culturally responsive way.

We recognize the ongoing impacts of colonization and systemic inequities experienced by Indigenous Peoples and the resulting over‑representation of Indigenous people in the criminal legal system, and are committed to providing culturally responsive support.

Victim Service Workers interact regularly with other players in the criminal legal system, including RCMP, Public Prosecution Services of Canada, Yukon Community Corrections, Justice Wellness Centre and Youth Probation. This position is based in Whitehorse, and travels periodically to other Yukon communities to provide Victim Services support.

Essential Qualifications
  • Post‑secondary degree or equivalent in social work, psychology, criminology, or related discipline.

  • Experience working in emergency, crisis, or high‑pressure settings.
  • Experience supporting and advocating for Yukon First Nations and/or Canadian Indigenous peoples; experience with LGBTQI2S+, BIPOC, and/or newcomer communities is also an asset.
  • Experience providing information and support to victims of crime would be an asset.
