Overview
Pharmacist role at Indian Health Service. Serves as a clinical pharmacist providing direct pharmaceutical care for patients within the Indian Health Service. This position is a major source of pharmaceutical clinical information and is expected to manage selected patients with chronic disease states, as well as providing pharmaceutical care for acute patients.
Responsibilities- Interpret and dispense prescribed products, including review of labeling for directions for use and precautions to assure proper protection of prescribed products to the patient.
- Provide specialized services to assist patients with managing conditions such as diabetes, asthma, high blood pressure and other chronic illnesses.
- Provide information and advice about drug therapy and usage, drug interactions, side effects, dosage, and proper medication storage.
- Maintain records such as pharmacy files, patient records, inventories, and control records for narcotics or controlled drugs.
- Compound and dispense medications as prescribed by physicians, dentists, and other licensed practitioners by calculating, weighing, measuring, and mixing ingredients.
- May serve as a pharmacy consultant and advisor to groups such as the therapeutic agents committee, the hospital research committee, and the infection control committee.

Selectee may be subject to a probationary period. U.S. Citizenship is required. Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959. This is a designated position covered by Public Law 101-630 requiring contact or control over Indian children. Confidential Financial Disclosure Form required. Employee health policies related to Measles, Rubella, and seasonal influenza immunizations may apply. - Medical staff privileges The selected individual is required to obtain and maintain medical staff clinical privileges, including licensure requirements. If privileges are not obtained/maintained, adverse actions may occur.
- Background and eligibility On-call hours may be required. Successfully pass E-Verify. Direct deposit required. Pre-employment fingerprint check and background investigation are required; eligibility is contingent on clearance. Credit checks may be part of the background process.
- Education and licensing This position has an education requirement. You must meet basic professional requirements and have a current pharmacist license in a U.S. state/DC/territory. Documentation of education may be required (transcripts accepted). Foreign education must include an equivalency certificate where applicable.
- Experience Demonstrated knowledge, skills, abilities, and competencies to perform the work of the position. Includes dispensing medications, evaluating medication use patterns, administrative or advisory pharmacy work, planning and evaluating medication programs, establishing medication-handling procedures, researching medical literature, and maintaining medication records.
- Basic Requirements Degree:
Doctoral degree in Pharmacy (ACPE-accredited or equivalent). Licensure: NAPLEX and MPJE; licensed to practice in a U.S. state/DC/territory. Medical color vision requirement. - Specialized Experience For GS-12 level, at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-11, involving outpatient clinic work, clinical management of therapies, patient interview and history gathering, and evaluation of medication regimens for safety and effectiveness.
This position has an education requirement. Unofficial transcripts are accepted in the application package; official transcripts required prior to offer. Acceptance of foreign education requires a Certificate of Foreign Equivalency.
