Job Summary

We are currently hiring for a Relief Part‑time Registered Nurse, Perinatal to join our Maternal – Infant – Child & Youth (MICY) team at Surrey Memorial Hospital located in Surrey, B.C. This position is available until approximately December 2026 or until the return of the incumbent.

Detailed Overview

The Registered Nurse, Perinatal provides direct patient care to child‑bearing patients and their families during the intra‑, postpartum and high‑risk ante‑partum periods by assessing, planning, providing and evaluating nursing care to patients in a perinatal clinical unit.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct a comprehensive nursing assessment of the patient and unborn baby on admission and at regular intervals; allocate patient to appropriate care area within the Maternal Program; make a nursing diagnosis; and initiate emergency care when needed.
  • Collaborate with patients, families/support persons, physicians and the inter‑professional team to develop, implement and modify an optimal care plan; establish a therapeutic relationship and advocate for patient rights and autonomy.
  • Participate in care and discharge planning; update the care plan and intervene as appropriate; coordinate nursing care and make referrals according to established protocols.
  • Teach patients and families/support persons about health promotion, pregnancy conditions, birth experience, postpartum and newborn care, and parenting.
  • Document assessments, diagnoses, interventions, and outcomes according to practice standards.
  • Participate in quality improvement, risk management, research, and special projects as required.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Education and Experience

Graduate from an approved School of Nursing; current practicing registration as a Registered Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM); one (1) year of recent, related clinical perinatal nursing experience in the designated clinical area and completion of relevant postgraduate coursework or certification. Current Basic Rescuer (Level

C) and Neonatal Resuscitation (NRP) certificates are required.

  • Complete initial and ongoing patient assessment and apply maternal/fetal/newborn theory to provide nursing care.
  • Recognize acuity changes and make appropriate decisions using evidence‑based practice.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, families, the public, medical staff and the inter‑professional team via verbal, written and electronic means.
  • Promote person‑centered care, empathy, and cultural sensitivity.
  • Integrate and evaluate data from multiple sources to solve problems.
  • Work independently and collaborate with the inter‑professional team.
  • Teach and instruct patients and families on essential healthcare topics.
  • Organize and prioritize work in a changing environment.
  • Use related equipment and relevant computer applications.
  • Possess the physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
