Maintenance Mechanic 10

This position installs, maintains, repairs, and inspects plumbing, mechanical systems, electrical systems, and other facility components. It also manages the heating/chilled water systems, including boilers, chillers, pumps, tanks/heat exchangers, and HVAC equipment. The role includes preparing reports and maintaining records for these systems. The technician orders materials, ensures code compliance, trains, and supervises maintenance staff and contractors. Work orders include preventive maintenance and material and labor estimates for proper purchasing and distribution.

The position also assigns and oversees on‑site contractor work, inspecting it for proper installation, maintenance, and repair.

Maintenance Mechanic 7‑E9

Employees install, maintain, repair, and inspect plumbing, mechanical, electrical, and other facility components. Responsibilities also cover heating/chilled water systems—boilers, chillers, pumps, tanks/heat exchangers, and HVAC equipment—ensuring proper operations. The technician orders materials, meets required codes, completes assigned work orders, performs preventive maintenance, and maintains grounds areas.

Education

Education typically acquired through completion of high school.

Experience
  • Maintenance Mechanic 7: No specific type or amount is required.
  • Maintenance Mechanic 8: Two years of experience assisting skilled trades workers in the mechanical or electrical trades.
  • Maintenance Mechanic E9: Four years of experience assisting skilled trades workers in the mechanical or electrical trades, including two years equivalent to a Maintenance Mechanic 8.
  • Maintenance Mechanic 10: Five years of experience assisting skilled trades workers in the mechanical or electrical trades, including one year equivalent to a Maintenance Mechanic E9. Completion of a recognized program in vocational training for the mechanical or electrical trades may be substituted for two years of experience assisting skilled trades workers.

New hires to the MDOC along with previous MDOC employees that are returning after being away from the department for more than two years will complete Non‑Custody New Employee Training (NCNET) either 40 hours or 80 hours of initial in‑person training based on their level of offender contact and job classification. All new employees will complete additional online training to successfully complete their non‑custody new employee training.
