Essential Job Functions (EJFs)- EJF #1: Conduct technical science‑based inspections, complaints, or food‑borne illness investigations of retail food establishments, school cafeterias, bed & breakfast establishments, and non‑profit food operations using HACCP principles. Prioritize work and submit inspection reports within eight working days.
- EJF #2: Perform routine compliance and complaint youth camp facility inspections, investigate or refer complaints on public school district facilities, public swimming pools, water features, public lodging, and public health nuisances.
- EJF #3: Complete travel reimbursement requests, weekly activity reports, CAPPS time sheets and certification, and other departmental reports; ensure timely submission.
- EJF #4: Investigate consumer complaints within state jurisdiction involving food products, prepare detailed reports, refer local jurisdiction complaints within five business days, and assist local health departments.
- EJF #5: Provide information and technical assistance to retail food establishments, public officials, and the public on food safety and general sanitation statutes.
- EJF #6: Attend worker safety training, program staff training, and other professional training to maintain expertise; respond to public health emergencies.
- EJF #7: Participate in regional assignments, special initiatives, and disaster response or recovery activities; maintain required certifications (ICS 100, 200, 700, 800) and valid Texas driver’s license.
- Knowledge of state and federal sanitation laws, regulations, and retail food statutes.
- Knowledge of inspection techniques for schools, camps, pools, hotels, nuisance complaints, and food establishments.
- Knowledge of HACCP principles and application to retail food environments.
- Skill to identify rodent filth and read small print during inspections.
- Skill to write and verbally communicate clearly and concisely when making decisions.
- Skill to execute food program and public sanitation activities fairly, uniformly, and ethically; build effective relationships with staff, food establishments, local officials, and the public.
- Skill to use computer for word processing, database applications, and spreadsheets for reports.
- Ability to work independently with little supervision, organize tasks efficiently.
- Ability to perform physical inspections requiring walking, standing, bending, climbing in various weather conditions.
- Ability to travel extensively throughout Texas and occasional out‑of‑state travel.
- Availability for emergency or disaster response on a 24/7 basis, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Required:
Texas driver’s license or a non‑Texas license with intent to obtain Texas license. - Required:
Current registration as a Professional Registered Sanitarian in Texas (TDLR). - Required:
Bachelor’s degree from a U.S. accredited institution (equivalent foreign degree acceptable). - Preferred:
Experience conducting environmental sanitation inspection work.
