Job Description:

The Psychiatric Nursing Assistant II (PNA II) performs moderately complex (journey-level) rehabilitative patient care services under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) in an inpatient setting. The organization comprises nine psychiatric hospitals, one youth residential treatment facility, and thirteen state-supported living centers, with a focus on recovery-oriented and science-based care.

Essential Job Functions (EJFs)

Attends work on a regular basis and may be scheduled for specific or rotating shifts, overtime as needed, and performs other duties as assigned.

Takes an active role in implementing individualized recovery plans and offers consistent, ongoing support to help patients reach their goals. Uses therapeutic, person-centered communication, assists with activities of daily living, hygiene, and eating to promote independence, and accompanies patients to appointments as required.

Communicates effectively with team members to promote a positive workplace. Serves as a participant in recovery or admissions teams and provides on-going verbal and written communication concerning patients. Uses basic computer and documentation skills to report patient care information clearly and timely. Assists the licensed nurse in monitoring patients for medication administration or treatment, including taking vital signs and other tasks within competency.

Promotes safety and patient engagement, and co-facilitates groups as assigned or requested.

Responds to crisis or psychiatric emergencies using least restrictive interventions under RN supervision (TIPS) and ensures health and safety of all persons. Performs CPR/Heimlich and AED use per American Heart Association guidelines. Provides timely clinical information to the RN regarding possible medication side effects, disease/injury, or behavioral escalation. In the absence of PNA III/IV, provides guidance/preceptorship to PNAs as requested to maintain smooth patient care.

Participates in unit-based and hospital-wide committees focused on quality improvement and patient safety.

Performs other duties as assigned to ensure efficient operation of the patient care unit, including disaster response, COOP activation, and potential alternate shift patterns or locations.

Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of patient care techniques and treatment, therapy, developmental, and patient-centered recovery programs.
  • Knowledge of basic computer skills.
  • Knowledge of effective interpersonal and leadership skills and ability to interact with team members.
  • Skills in taking vital signs.
  • Ability to read, write and understand English to effectively communicate and follow instructions.
  • Ability to provide patient care, administer first aid or CPR, and conduct TIPS.
  • Ability to work with others and accept supervision; ability to train and guide others.
Registrations, Licensure Requirements or Certifications

If transporting patients, must possess a valid Texas driver license or obtain it within 90 days of hire. Out-of-state license requires an original certified driving record. CPR certification or ability to obtain within 60 days of employment.

Initial Screening Criteria

Twelve (12) months of work experience; twelve (12) months of direct care experience is preferred.

Additional Information

Applicants must pass fingerprint background check, pre-employment drug screen, and registry checks (CANRS, Nurse Aide, Medication Aide, Employee Misconduct, LEIE). Males 18-25 must register with Selective Service. All applicants must be at least 18;
