Job Summary

Facilities Technicians perform a variety of journey level or higher carpentry, custodial, maintenance, grounds keeping, and/or utility tasks. This position is assigned to Finish Carpentry.

Installs, replaces, and maintains a variety of structures, equipment, and/or grounds, which may include: changing and putting up lights, checking support equipment, checking equipment fluid levels, assembling and moving furniture, and performing other related activities.

Performs general or specialized construction, maintenance, and repairs on facilities, grounds, and/or equipment; prepares related materials lists.

Operates a variety of specialized tools and equipment, including a variety hand and power tools and/or other related tools and equipment.

Troubleshoots, maintains, and repairs malfunctioning equipment.

Performs various manual labor duties, which includes setting up for special events, assisting with construction and/or modification activities, constructing signs, and performing other related activities.

Inspects facilities and grounds to identify and resolve potential safety hazards.

Maintains documentation for work orders.

Monitors supply inventory; orders required supplies when inventory levels meet established guidelines.

Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.

Positions assigned to Finish Carpenter may be responsible for:

  • Performing skilled rough and finish carpentry, cabinetry, and millwork;
  • Constructing, repairing, and installing walls, partitions, doors, windows, trim, moldings, and flooring;
  • Repairing and replacing drywall, ceiling tile, paneling, and other surfaces;
  • Building, repairing, and refinishing furniture, cabinetry, Formica counter tops and shelving;
  • Reading and interpreting blueprints, drawings, and specifications;
  • Selecting and preparing lumber and materials to required dimensions and tolerances;
  • Performing layout, cutting, fitting, assembly, and installation using hand and power tools;
  • Participating in campus planning, remodeling and renovation projects;
  • Performing light masonry, painting, or hardware installation related to carpentry work;
  • Performing and assisting with lock installation and repair.

For positions with bus and vehicle driving responsibilities:
Safely operates NWC buses and other vehicles, adhering to all state and federal traffic laws, regulations, and safety protocols. For bus driving, performs pre-trip and post-trip inspections, provides assistance to passengers, reports any mechanical issues, incidents, delays, or safety concerns to the transportation supervisor promptly.

Required Training and Experience

High School Diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.) and up to one year of specialized or technical training beyond high school; at least two years of experience in area of specialty (carpentry, maintenance, senior level utility work, HVAC, electrical, locksmith) or related area; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.

Position assigned to Finish Carpentry requires experience in commercial or institutional construction and maintenance carpentry, including rough and finish work, cabinetry, drywall, and door hardware.

Preferred Training & Experience

Minimum of five years of experience in finish carpentry, woodworking, or construction preferred. Locksmithing experience preferred.

Licensing Requirements
  • Valid Wyoming Driver’s License and acceptable driving record;
  • Acceptable criminal background check;
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Maintenance and repair practices and procedures in assigned area of responsibility;
  • Applicable Federal, State, and Local laws, rules, and regulations;
  • Chemicals and chemical mixtures;
  • Safety and security procedures;
  • Applicable equipment and tools;
  • Inventory maintenance principles;
  • Basic mathematical concepts;
  • Basic construction procedures.

Position assigned to Finish Carpentry requires working knowledge of rough and finish carpentry methods and tools; cabinetmaking, casework, and millwork fabrication; installation and repair of doors, frames, and hardware; drywall, trim, and finish surface repair; furniture repair, refinishing, and installation; blueprint and schematic reading for construction and renovation projects; and understanding of wood species, laminates, adhesives, and finishing materials.

Skill in:

  • Utilizing a variety of hand and/or power tools;
