The Spanish-speaking Dental Assistant position at the Sedgwick County Health Department serves as a scheduler, care coordinator, and chairside dental assistant to prevent disease and improve the health of children ages 0 to 19 years old and pregnant women. This position schedules patients onsite or coordinates care with offsite volunteer dentists, assists dentists following standard dental procedure order, and properly maintains and uses dental equipment.

The position communicates instructions in English or Spanish directly with clients and guardians during and after a procedure. The Dental Assistant enters client-related data into an electronic health record and other software systems. The position will provide support during public health emergencies.

  • Schedule Volunteer Dentists to come onsite to provide treatment.
  • Confirm all appointments the day prior.
  • Coordinate care with offsite volunteers.
  • Complete referrals and follow up to collect patient documentation from offsite volunteers.
  • Greet patients and collect proof of eligibility documentation and patient paperwork.
  • Communicate with clients and guardians in English or Spanish.
  • Answer patient and guardian questions before and after appointment.
  • Prepare patients for dental procedures by making them comfortable and providing any instructions.
  • Sterilize dental instruments and equipment, placing them for easy access by the dentist.
  • Prepare the dental exam room for use by the dentist by making sure it is stocked and organized.
  • Assist the dentist during procedures, including passing instruments, getting supplies, and using the suction tube to keep the patient’s mouth dry.
  • Take dental radiographs, charting and entering clinical documentation.
  • Prevent the spread of infection and disease by maintaining a surgically clean work environment.
  • Travel to offsite locations for screenings once a month.
  • Travel to offsite locations for indoor outreach events that include: community health fairs, events for recruiting volunteers, and community presentations.
  • Communicate with clients in English or Spanish during treatment to keep them safe and cooperative through dental treatment.
Data Entry
  • Verify patient notes are correct prior to entry into electronic health record (EHR).
  • Perform data entry of provider, client and appointment information into EHR and other software systems.
  • Perform self-audits to ensure accuracy and completeness of data entry.
Minimum Qualifications:

One year of public health, medical or dental work experience. Experience may be substituted with education that provides applicable knowledge and skills. Employees with no prior dental assistant training will complete chairside dental assistant training and demonstrate proficiency within 180 days of employment. Bilingual in English and Spanish. Per Sedgwick County policy, this is a driving level position that requires a valid US driver’s license without restrictions and current proof of automobile insurance.

Must pass pre-employment testing in Spanish Fluency. Must complete Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA) IS 100 and 700 courses within 30 days of employment. Must obtain BLS CPR Certification within 90 days of employment.

Preferred Qualifications:

Graduation from Dental Assistant training program or equivalent work experience of two years working as a chairside dental assistant. Two years of experience as a chairside dental assistant. Experience as a Spanish Interpreter. Certified Dental Assistant. Bilingual Spanish Speaking.
