Responsibilities- Research, pursue, and complete grant applications and supporting documents, collaborating with city departments on sustainability and resiliency efforts.
- Identify and apply for grants related to sustainability and resilience.
- Assist staff and community members in navigating funding available from the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund, Federal Tax Credits, and State/Local Rebate Programs funded by the Inflation Reduction Act.
- Research, implement, and report on sustainability and resiliency initiatives to appropriate interdepartmental staff.
- Provide expertise on a wide range of environmental topics, including:
- Drought Planning and Mitigation
- Electric Vehicles
- Environmentally friendly purchasing policy
- Green Business Recognition
- Green Infrastructure (trees, stormwater drainage)
- Local Risk Assessment (natural disasters and environmental hazards)
- Planning and Zoning (solar, transit, urban infill)
- Urban Heat Mitigation (trees, reflective pavement/roofs)
- Waste Reduction, Recycling, and Composting
- Develop environmental education programs and provide training, outreach and best‑practice guidance to staff and the public
- Monitor latest trends and technologies in sustainability; recommend innovative solutions to enhance environmental performance.
- Track greenhouse gas emissions, provide baseline data, and support the City’s efforts to reduce pollution and improve quality of life.
- Monitor monthly utility data and recommend adjustments and improvements.
- Report annually to the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) for scoring on the City’s sustainability efforts.
- Serve as the key contact for interdepartmental sustainability initiatives and communication.
- Serve as a public contact for questions and concerns related to sustainability.
- Additional duties and responsibilities may be assigned by the City of Wichita.
- Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills.
- Creative problem‑solving and analytical skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite; ability to operate a standard computer keyboard, video display terminal, and electronic spreadsheet tools.
- Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and effective time management.
- Knowledge of spreadsheets, basic mathematical operations, and descriptive statistical techniques.
- Knowledge of research techniques and statistical procedures.
- Ability to plan and organize the work of others.
- Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates, colleagues from other departments, external partners, and the public.
- May be required to obtain and maintain a valid Kansas driver’s license.
