Job Title: Elementary School Nurse
Position Function: The School Nurse reports to the Principal(s) of the assigned school(s) and to the Coordinator of Health Services. The position provides school health services to pupils and coordinates district-wide activities according to established policies and guidelines.
Essential Performance Responsibilities- Serves as a health advocate for the pupil.
- Provides building-level leadership to promote healthy attitudes among pupils and teachers and a safe, healthy school environment.
- Encourages, coordinates, and participates in programs of health education through individual pupil/parent consultation and classroom participation.
- Facilitates implementation of Board of Education health-related policies.
- Assesses, develops, and implements health care plans for pupils, including prescribed special health care services and/or medication administration, according to Board of Education policy, state accreditation standards, and Nurse Practice Act regulations.
- Designs and implements health appraisal programs, including dental inspections, vision and hearing screening.
- Promotes wellness through periodic medical and dental examinations for all pupils; assists in detecting and referring pupils with health concerns.
- Collaborates with other school personnel to promote child health and its optimal interaction with education.
- Counsels with pupils, parents, and staff concerning health needs or concerns of pupils.
- Works closely with families regarding the pupil's health needs, facilitating communication among the school, parents, and the pupil's health care provider.
- Participates as a member of the Child Study Team(s); assesses and interprets pupil health status and, as indicated, plans, provides, and monitors related health services.
- Assists in the prevention and control of communicable diseases, including monitoring immunization status.
- Is knowledgeable of community health resources and assists parents to utilize these resources.
- Provides emergency care for pupils and staff in case of injury or sudden illness until a lawful custodian assumes responsibility.
- Maintains health records for pupils and prepares requested reports.
- Maintains professional nurse licensure and all appropriate certifications.
Assists with additional duties as assigned by supervisor.
EquipmentThis position may require the use of SMART boards, iPads, and basic office equipment such as computers, copiers, scanners, and a fax machine. Must always comply with WPS guidelines for equipment use.
TravelLimited travel between schools and central offices may be required.
Physical and Mental Demands- Must be able to walk long distances and respond rapidly in emergency situations.
- Stand for long periods of time; bend, twist, balance, stoop, climb steps, reach overhead, lift, push, pull up to 20 pounds or more with assistance.
- Considerable knowledge of medical disorders and treatment.
- Considerable knowledge of child growth and development.
- Working knowledge of public health problems and procedures for treatment in coordination with other health and social service agencies.
- Working knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and regulations affecting the delivery of school health services.
- Some knowledge of the school organization and the community served.
- Ability to identify abnormal growth and development and symptoms of disease.
- Ability to coordinate and facilitate services between the school, local health agency, and other community resources.
- Ability to develop and maintain health records on students.
- Ability to develop positive working relationships.
- Minimum of a Bachelor’s (or Associate’s) degree in nursing from an accredited university.
- Registered Nurse license required.
- Minimum of 3 years of nursing experience; experience in pediatrics preferred.
- Experience with pediatric populations with significant physical and mental health issues preferred.
- Heavy contact with staff and students.
- Must handle all situations with tact and diplomacy.
- Must exhibit a professional manner and maintain a positive attitude with all students and colleagues.
- Employees are expected to perform all assigned duties and work all scheduled hours during each designated workday, unless approved leave is given.
- Any deviation from assigned hours requires prior approval from the employee’s supervisor or building administrator.
- Employees must report to work dressed in a manner that reflects a positive image of USD 259 (Wichita Public Schools) and is appropriate for their position.
