Job Story

GoCreate is a creative community workspace open to creators of all ages and experiences, located on Innovation Campus at Wichita State University. Community members are able to bring their ideas and work on their projects, with GoCreate providing the space, tools, materials, knowledge, and helping hands.

We are looking for a team-oriented Welding and Metals Technician who can lead and create a variety of projects. In this job, you will instruct and mentor users on a variety of metal fabrication tools in our makerspace while having the opportunity to design and fabricate custom parts to support teaching and research projects. You will model a professional safety culture while maintaining work areas, tools, and supplies with the support of part-time student lab assistants.

You will have opportunities to assist with selecting, installing, operating and maintaining equipment in fabrication, welding, and metals.

Job Summary

Manages and trains staff and students to successfully operate equipment. Designs and fabricates custom and/or standard parts to support teaching and research projects. Models a safety culture while maintaining work areas, tools, and supplies. Manages and performs equipment maintenance, repair, inventory, and training.

Essential Functions
  • Instructs and trains staff and students to successfully operate equipment.
  • Assists in the development and revisions of standard training materials, operating procedures and related systems.
  • Designs and fabricates custom and/or standard parts to support teaching and research projects.
  • Models a safety culture while maintaining work areas, tools, and supplies.
  • Assists with the selection, installation, operation and maintenance of equipment in fabrication, welding, and metals.
  • Assigns work and manages projects.
  • Provides oversight of students including assisting in the training of new team members, communicating instructions, and assigning work to others.
  • Assists with receiving, inventory, storage, and maintenance of supplies, materials, tools, and equipment as needed.
Required

Education and Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Three (3) years of related experience in welding and/or metal fabrication.
Required License/Certifications/Training

Welding certification or welding educator certification required.

Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Experience with welding including, but not limited to, Mig, Tig, stick with all metals, HaaS, and tubing.
  • Experience with reading and understanding blueprints; ability to redline drawings using best practices.
  • Excellent customer service.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to adapt to new situations, think critically, and resolve issues independently.
  • Understanding of metal shop tools and procedures with welding and related equipment.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to ascend and descend ladders and/or stairs.
  • Ability to position self for inspection, construction or maintenance of equipment and/or buildings including confined, elevated and loud noise spaces.
  • Ability to position self to clean designated areas, equipment and items, including confined, elevated, and loud noise spaces.
  • Ability to position self to maintain vehicles and equipment, including under the vehicle or piece of equipment.
  • Ability to move, transport, and/or deliver items, supplies, or equipment.
  • Ability to use tools, equipment, and technology necessary to do the job, including dexterity in instrument manipulation.
