Home Repair Carpenter at Wichita Habitat for Humanity

The Home Repair Carpenter supports the execution of Habitat for Humanity’s home repair and preservation projects by performing skilled carpentry, coordinating work on project sites, and collaborating with volunteers, homeowners, inspectors, and subcontractors. This position operates in a team-centered environment and requires strong communication skills, sound judgment, and adherence to safety standards.

Essential Functions

The following are key responsibilities for the Home Repair Carpenter. Other duties may be assigned as needed.

Carpentry and Home Repair Work
  • Perform hands‑on home repair activities, including framing, drywall, siding, doors/windows, flooring repairs, basic roofing, minor plumbing/electrical components (within permitted scope), and general carpentry tasks.
  • Conduct site assessments and assist in developing project scopes and material lists.
  • Ensure repairs meet Habitat quality standards, industry best practices, and applicable code requirements.
  • Identify and communicate necessary change orders or scope adjustments to the Construction Supervisor.
  • Maintain inventory of tools, materials, and supplies in an orderly manner.
Safety
  • Maintain Competent Person Safety Training and other necessary job‑based certifications and use appropriate procedures.
  • Maintain CPR and First Aid certification.
  • Ensure safety compliance on job sites and take prompt action in response to safety violations.
  • Be prepared to follow standard protocols and take immediate action in case of accidents.
  • Consistently maintain all relevant affiliate property, including job trailers, construction tools & equipment, warehouse space and project sites to keep them organized, clean and safe at all times.
Project Planning & Execution
  • Support scheduling, sequencing of work, and material planning to ensure projects progress efficiently.
  • Use construction management tools (e.g., Smartsheet) to support tracking of tasks, timelines, and project status.
  • Coordinate with subcontractors and inspectors as needed.
  • Lead and mentor volunteers, including those with limited construction experience.
  • Demonstrate patience, inclusiveness, and clear communication to ensure a positive volunteer and homeowner experience.
  • Interact professionally with Habitat partner families and individuals experiencing housing insecurity.
Equipment & Vehicle Operation
  • Safely operate power tools, hand tools, carpentry equipment, and ladders.
  • Drive a pickup truck and tow a utility trailer to transport tools, equipment, and materials.
