Electrician – U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs

Pay Range: Base pay $33.16/hr – $38.72/hr.

Summary

The primary purpose of the position is to perform electrician duties for healthcare facilities within Robert J Dole VA Medical Center. The incumbent will be required to assist other trades persons and/or any other work as assigned by the supervisor to meet the mission of Facility Management Service (FMS).

Qualifications
  • Experience:

    A specific length of training and experience is not required – but must show evidence of training or sufficient scope and quality of ability to do the work. Evidence must be supported by detailed resume descriptions.
  • Applicants will be rated in accordance with OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.
  • Screen‑out element will be evaluated first; those satisfying the minimal requirement are considered for further rating.
  • Qualification elements:
    Ability to do the work without more than normal supervision;
    Electric Drawings;
    Electrical Equipment;
    Technical Practices;
    Troubleshooting (Electronic Equipment);
    Use and Maintain Hand Tools (Electrical Work).
  • Volunteer experience (National Service programs, community, etc.) will be considered for credit.
Duties
  • Installs, modifies, repairs, loads, and tests new and installed distribution and building service equipment for a variety of electrical systems, including 4160 V switch gear, motors, transformers (single and 3‑phase), distribution panels, constant current transformers, 480 V street lighting, underground distribution lines, power and control circuits, emergency generators, and more.
  • Performs preventive maintenance on all types of electrical equipment and systems following manufacturers’ and/or VA recommendations.
  • Cleans, lubricates, adjusts, changes component parts, writes necessary work orders and makes minor repairs as needed.
  • Completes scheduled inspections and documents equipment deficiencies in prescribed methods.
  • Works from building plans, blueprints, wiring diagrams, engineering drawings, maintenance and technical manuals.
  • Determines size, type of wire, conduit, circuit breakers, fuses and other materials to make necessary installations.
  • Repairs and/or makes modifications to equipment and systems.
  • Diagnoses equipment malfunctions, applies proper repair procedures, orders necessary parts or materials, completes repairs within allotted time and established due date.
  • Work schedule:

    Monday‑Friday 8:00 am‑4:30 pm.
  • Physical requirements:

    walking, standing, bending, stooping, ladder climbing, reaching above head, small cramped spaces, lifting up to 40 lb, exposure to toxic fumes, gases, airborne particles. Respirator mandatory when toxic exposure possible; beardless, baseline pulmonary function test required. OSHA requirements apply.
  • Work conditions: close areas, shop environment, possible cuts, burns, flying particles, falls from ladders, high noise levels. Protective devices to be used.
