Qualified Habilitation Specialist – Staffordshire County Council
About the RoleThe Vision Inclusion Team supports children and young people aged 0‑25 with vision impairment across Staffordshire. We are looking for a qualified Habilitation Specialist to provide specialist teaching support and training.
Main Responsibilities- Assess, plan, implement and review training programmes for CYP with vision impairment, including those with complex needs, integrating social and self‑determination skills.
- Implement and deliver independent travel skills – public transport use, cane skills and electronic APPs/devices.
- Deliver habilitation awareness training to a variety of settings and stakeholders, building capacity across the local authority.
- Work flexibly across homes, nurseries, mainstream schools, colleges and specialist provision.
- Periodically review the aims and objectives of habilitation training, referencing national guidelines.
- Maintain CPD activities required by Habilitation VI UK or relevant professional bodies.
- Stay informed on current research and developments in habilitation to improve service provision.
- Hold the Habilitation and Disabilities of Sight Graduate Diploma and one or more of the following: BSc Hons Top‑up Degree in Habilitation Studies, Rehabilitation Officer Diploma / Advanced Certificate in Education (ACE), or another nationally recognised qualification.
- Demonstrate commitment to further study for full habilitation accreditation if holding a Foundation or Higher Education Diploma.
- Experience working with children and young people aged 0‑25 and supporting students with vision loss.
- Registered with an appropriate professional body upon appointment.
- Have a ‘can‑do’ attitude, enthusiasm and flexibility to support a high‑quality, inclusive habilitation experience.
- Full UK driving licence or alternative means; essential car user for county‑wide travel.
