1:1 SEMH Teaching Assistant – Year 9 (Full-Time)

Location: Wigan Area

Contract: Full-Time, Long-Term
Setting: Secondary School (SEMH Focus)

Teaching Personnel are seeking a dedicated 1:1 SEMH Teaching Assistant to support a Year 9 pupil in a secondary school in the Wigan area. The student presents with a range of Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, including anxiety, emotional dysregulation, low self-esteem, difficulties with peer relationships, challenges with behaviour regulation, and past trauma that impacts classroom engagement. Your support will be crucial in helping them access learning, regulate emotions, and build positive routines.

About

the Role
  • Provide tailored, consistent 1:1 support to a Year 9 pupil throughout the school day.
  • Use de-escalation and positive behaviour strategies to maintain a supportive environment.
  • Help the pupil regulate emotions, re‑engage in lessons, and develop resilience.
  • Build a trusting relationship that promotes confidence, independence, and positive choices.
  • Adapt learning materials to suit the pupil’s needs under teacher direction.
  • Support with transitions between lessons and during unstructured times.
  • Work collaboratively with class teachers, SENCO, pastoral staff, and external agencies where needed.
  • Maintain accurate records related to progress, behaviour, and intervention strategies.
Candidate Requirements
  • Have experience supporting young people with SEMH needs (school, care, youth work, mentoring, or similar).
  • Understand SEMH presentations, such as anxiety, withdrawn behaviours, low mood, or challenging behaviours.
  • Are calm, patient, resilient, and able to remain consistent in difficult situations.
  • Can form positive, professional relationships with vulnerable young people.
  • Are confident using de‑escalation and trauma‑informed approaches.
  • Can commit to a full‑time, Monday–Friday school‑based role.
  • Hold an Enhanced Child Workforce DBS on the Update Service or are willing to apply for one via Teaching Personnel.
  • Are reliable, proactive, and passionate about helping pupils overcome barriers.
