We are looking for dynamic persons to join our team in the pre‑operative assessment department here at Wrightington Hospital.
You will play an important role in progressing our patients waiting for elective surgery through their pre‑op journey within a busy department that runs multiple clinics Monday to Friday. You will work alongside many disciplines and specialties.
The postholder will commence as a Band 5 and progress to a Band 6 following completion of the pre‑operative clinical assessment nurse training. You will also be required to complete competencies following the training and enrolment to the Pre‑operative Association Course will be at the discretion of the manager. Confidence in managing your own patient caseload in clinic and adherence to pre‑operative processes and procedures are essential.
The shift patterns will be between 07.30 and 17.00 hrs, Monday to Friday, with occasional Saturday clinic work.
Main duties of the roleDeliver direct patient care for patients scheduled for elective orthopaedic or surgical procedures. Use nurse‑led pre‑operative assessment processes and tools to assess a patient’s health and wellbeing, including cardiac, respiratory, neck and airway assessment. Support the ongoing management of elective orthopaedic and surgical patients throughout all aspects of their pathway.
Actively support the departmental manager, provide leadership to other staff, and in the absence of the manager, provide evidence‑based patient‑centred care.

Deliver high-quality assessments and care, ensuring clinical care meets individual needs and patient safety.
Provide specialist, patient‑centred care throughout the pre‑operative assessment process. Make autonomous clinical decisions and refer appropriately.
Promote best working practices through audits, uphold good communication skills, and provide clinical supervision for all staff.
Demonstrate leadership skills, promote evidence‑based clinical practice, and undertake formal and informal teaching to staff.
Support senior colleagues in the management and organisation of the pre‑operative assessment department.
Person specification Qualifications- First Level Registered Nurse
- Evidence of ongoing CPD
- Recent and relevant clinical experience within a clinic setting
- Evidence of leadership taking charge in the department
- Demonstration of specialist clinical skills for effective patient management relevant to the service
- Knowledge of professional and NHS issues and policy relating to the specialist area and role of a pre‑op assessment nurse
- Flexible to working days & hours
- Willingness to undertake recognised clinical skills & assessment course
