Casual, including weekends and evenings. As per program need and pursuant to the Collective Agreement.

Current Rate of Pay: $24.90 per hour plus 15% in lieu of benefits.

Position:
Union Affiliation.

General Statement Of Duties:
This is a casual position in which the incumbent will assist in the supervision and facilitation of select arena, aquatics, and community-based programs. Recreation Attendants will work in at least one of the program areas, dependent on their qualifications and interests. Under the direction of the Recreation Program Coordinator and/or the Aquatic Coordinator/Aquatic Staff III, Recreation Attendants interact with recreation users and assist with programs, services and special events that occur within arena, aquatics, and community program streams with the goal of providing a fun and safe experience.

These recreation positions ensure the safety of patrons participating in recreational programs and events in the Community Services Department. Related duties will include cleaning and light maintenance.

Must be able to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends. Hours of work vary by season but are typically 4–12 hours per week.

Supervision

The incumbent is responsible to the Director of Community Services under the direction of the Recreation Program Coordinator / Aquatics Coordinator.

Major Duties and Responsibilities
  • Reports accidents or injuries immediately to the Supervisor at the time of the incident and completes Incident Reports and/or Work Safe BC reports.
  • Detects and reports any hazardous conditions, practices and behaviours in the workplace/playspace.
  • Safety Supervision of patrons while
    • On the ice.
    • In community programs.
    • While on the slide.
    • In the pool.
  • Dressing Room / Change Room / Lobby and Fitness Room inspections for cleanliness, minor janitorial tasks and head counts.
  • Inspection of the park space for safety hazards / Sign in participants.
  • Perform duties in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Communicate with other staff in case of conflict, maintenance or emergency occurs.
  • Enforce facility guidelines and occupancy loads, requesting assistance should any difficulties arise.
  • Complete required forms including incidents, first aid, vandalism and log books.
  • Distribute, collect and return to storage areas any equipment utilized during the activity.
  • Exercises courtesy, tact, diplomacy and persuasion with the general public.
  • Participates in regular in-service training.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
Qualifications, Skills & Experience
  • Minimum 16 years of age.
  • Physical agility, the ability to complete duties requiring physical effort and a proven ability to provide excellent service to the public and patrons is required.
  • Ability to stand/skate for up to 3 hours at a time and periodically lift 20 kg.
  • Criminal Record Check including Vulnerable Sector Check.
  • Red Cross Standard First Aid.
  • CPR Level C Certification.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of facility emergency procedures.
  • Ability to deal with the public in an effective, informative courteous manner.
  • Bronze Cross if interested in operating the pool slide.
  • Ability to stop, crossover, skate backwards, and skate unassisted if interested in working in the arena.
  • Ability to communicate well with all age groups ranging from preschoolers to seniors.
  • Ability to work as a team player within the department and overall organization.
  • Practices and maintains skills and recertifies awards prior to their expiry dates.
