Responsibilities- Perform paraprofessional educational work in assisting teachers in providing developmental services to at‑risk preschoolers, including children with disabilities enrolled in the County Head Start program.
- Assist in planning and carrying out a daily program of activities with the goal of meeting the physical and developmental needs of young children.
- Assist in the supervision and care of children to ensure safe and clean learning environments.
- Collaborate with other program staff to ensure comprehensive services, including educational, health, and social services needs of individual children and their families.
- Interact with children, prepare and serve meals, teach different learning concepts, evaluate children’s developmental progress, and assist children with personal care tasks when needed.
- Work 196 days per year.
- High school graduation and 1 to 2 years of experience working with preschoolers and/or preadolescent children, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Child Development Associate (CDA) credential or ability to obtain one within 2 years; or enrollment in a program leading to an associate’s or bachelor’s degree in child development, early childhood education, or a related field.
- Valid driver’s license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia with an acceptable driving record; a commercial driver’s license with appropriate endorsements is preferred.
- Valid commercial driver’s license and appropriate endorsements may qualify for Teacher Assistant II with a starting base salary of $27,306.
- Acceptable criminal and child protective services background checks.
- Initial physical examination, including tuberculosis screening, and periodic reexaminations to ensure the incumbent poses no significant health risk to program participants.
- Certification in Medication Administration, CPR, and First Aid is preferred.
- Some knowledge of early childhood development theories and principles.
- Effective oral and written communication skills.
- General knowledge of personal computers, computer software, and tablets.
- Ability to manage and report data accurately and efficiently.
- Ability to detect signs of child abuse or neglect.
- Position considered essential (County designation as ALPHA) with possible emergency response duties.
The incumbent must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment, walking or standing to a significant degree. Duties include constant standing, walking, bending, stooping, climbing recreational equipment, and occasionally running and crawling while playing with children. The incumbent may lift children weighing 40–55 lbs. when necessary.
