The Fargo VA Health Care System is recruiting for a full‑time Mental Health Counselor for the Mental Health Integrated Care Community Service Line, and this vacancy will be filled with either a Social Worker – Licensed Professional Mental Health Counselor – or a Staff Psychologist. The position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP).

SummaryThe role requires a doctoral degree in psychology from an American Psychological Association (APA) accredited program (or equivalent Canadian Psychological Association accreditation) completed at the time of graduation, or a doctoral degree in any area of psychology that includes successful completion of a re‑specialization program with an APA or CPA accredited internship. Applicants must hold an unrestricted license to practice psychology at the doctoral level in a U.S. state, territory, or the District of Columbia, or be granted a temporary graduate psychologist appointment under 38 U.S.C. 7405 (c)(2)(B) for up to two years.
Furthermore, the applicant must provide official documentation of completed internship experience, or be board certified by the American Board of Professional Psychology, with continuing certification required for employment. Applicants may be considered pending completion of educational or certification requirements, but final hiring is contingent on meeting all stated criteria.

- Doctoral degree in psychology from an APA, PCSAS, or CPA accredited program (or applicable re‑specialization program)
- Doctoral degree awarded between 1951 and 1978 from a regionally accredited institution with a primarily psychological dissertation, combined with an approved one‑year internship
- Licensed to practice psychology at the doctoral level in the United States (or district of Columbia)
- English language proficiency per VA Handbook 5005
- Ability to maintain board certification if applying under the graduate psychologist appointment
- GS‑11:
No experience beyond basic requirements. - GS‑12:
At least one year of professional psychologist experience equivalent to GS‑11, with or without supervision as required for unlicensed applicants. - GS‑13:
At least two years of professional psychologist experience, with at least one year equivalent to GS‑12. - Proficiency in applying a broad range of evidence‑based psychological assessments and interventions to diverse patient populations.
- Ability to design, implement, and document treatment plans, including integrating new clinical procedures and participating in research activities when applicable.
- Consultation skills with interdisciplinary professionals and community providers.
- Knowledge of clinical research literature and ability to contribute to research teams for staff psychologist positions with research duties.
- Diagnose mental disorders and conduct psychological or cognitive assessments.
- Provide individual, family, and psycho educational group therapy using evidence‑based interventions.
- Offer consultation to clinical staff and community providers regarding assessment findings and treatment planning.
- Develop, implement, and document comprehensive psychotherapeutic treatment plans for assigned caseloads.
- Serve as a member of the Fargo VA Medical Staff with full clinical privileges, assuming responsibility for clinical findings, patient care decisions, and documentation.
- Maintain timely and accurate documentation in CPRS, including diagnostic and procedure coding.
- Participate in administrative, staff, and interdisciplinary meetings, including psychology service staff meetings and medical staff meetings.
- Provide clinical supervision and instruction to psychology students, pre‑doctoral interns, and residents.
- Complete and submit EDRP application within four months of start date if eligible, following VHA policy.
