SummaryThe Fargo VA Health Care System is recruiting for a full‑time Mental Health Counselor for the Mental Health Integrated Care Community Service Line. This vacancy may be filled by a Social Worker – Licensed Professional Mental Health Counselor or by a Staff Psychologist. The position is located at the Williston VA Clinic and is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP).
QualificationsApplicants who are pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but cannot be hired until all requirements are met.
Basic Requirements- United States Citizenship:
Non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. - Education:
Have a master’s degree in social work from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE);
Graduates of schools of social work that are in candidacy status do not meet this requirement until the school is fully accredited; A doctoral degree in social work may not substitute for the master’s degree. - Licensure:
Persons hired STDERR; VHA may waive the licensure or certificationட்ச for persons otherwise qualified pending completion of state prerequisites (only applies at the GS‑9 grade level);
For GS‑11 and above the candidate must be licensed or certified. - English Language Proficiency:
Social workers must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Handbook 5005, Part II, chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3j. - May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who meet the criteria).

Ability to utilize a Veteran‑centric approach when providing interventions and counseling for Veterans, their families, caregivers, and survivors;
Ability to assess psychosocial functioning and needs and to formulate treatment plans;
Ability to implement treatment modalities with individuals, families, and groups;
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and communication;
Fundamental knowledge of medical and mental health diagnoses, NSInteger( soil) Manager and procedures;
Knowledge of community resources and ability to coordinate services;
Skill in independently conducting assessments and interventions across diverse backgrounds;
Ability to provide consultation services to new social workers and students.
- Screening / Assessment – The social worker collaborates with the interdisciplinary team, veteran, and family to develop an assessment that highlights strengths, limitations, supports, and service needs.
- T Risiko planning / Goal Setting – Development of treatment plans and achievable goals; plans updated annually or as needed.
- Treatment / Therapy – Provision of evidence‑based treatment for mental health disorders; referral to specialists when appropriate.
- Referral to Service Providers – Act as the VA and community resource expert; collaborate with providers; educate veterans and caregivers on resources.
- Resource Usage / Development – Effective use of VA and community social service program files.
- Advocacy – Advocate for the veteran/family in bureaucratic settings; empower self‑advocacy.
- Crisis Intervention – Rapid assessment and development of crisis plans for inpatient admission.
- You will be asked to participate in a pre‑employment examination or evaluation as part of the selection process.
- Questions about physical demands or environmental factors can be addressed at the time of evaluation or examination.
