As a Field Service Technician‑Network Specialist
, you will have overall responsibility for maintaining a highly reliable network of systems including the central office switch, carrier and transmission equipment, fiber electronics, business communication systems, and any other auxiliary equipment. You will install and maintain network infrastructure and circuits, as well as digital switch devices and cross‑connects. You will participate on project teams and may lead projects. You will work with a variety of telecommunications concepts, practices, and procedures.
You will also install, maintain, and repair telecommunications products that TDS sells and leases such as Key Systems, PBX, Centrex, and other business systems; install, maintain, and repair switching equipment including carrier, DSAs, remotes, and related transmission equipment; and handle complex PBX systems. Services include Telephony, Video/CATV/DBS, Internet, and high‑speed networks.
In this role you’ll have direct, face‑to‑face contact with our customers and will be proactive in selling TDS services and products. You will exceed customer expectations by providing extraordinary service, identifying needs, and delivering communication solutions. You will understand how to use and demonstrate TDS products and seek sales opportunities while educating customers. Products & services include Local Service, Central Office Services, Structured Cabling, MAC (Moves, Adds and Changes), Voice Mail, Audio/Video Conferencing, and Non‑regulated CPE.
Due to in‑field support and on‑call requirements, you must reside within a 60‑minute driving distance from the New London, MN warehouse (7901 Chapin Dr NE, New London, MN 56273).
Responsibilities- Installs, troubleshoots, tests, splices, repairs, and maintains telephone and network equipment, customer premise equipment, Video/CATV/DBS, fiber optic/copper facilities, and other TDS products for new and existing customers. Configures, maintains, and repairs PBX, Key Systems, Centrex, fiber terminals, POTS, ISDN, DSL, T‑1s, DS3s (carriers, paging & wireless). Identifies location of defective cable using various test equipment and repairs buried, aerial, and customer cable.
Locates cable and fiber in response to customer requests and construction needs. Requires pole climbing and operating construction equipment. Marks company underground facilities to prevent damage. Maintains log of all locate requests and performs cable fault acceptance tests on newly constructed facilities. - Installs, troubleshoots, tests, repairs, and maintains central office equipment including switches, operating software, and auxiliary equipment. Maintains backups to the switch, voicemail, fiber optic terminals, etc. Updates manuals and provides functional support.
- Provides advanced troubleshooting support, responds to “trouble” dispatches.
- Enhances and maintains record systems (cross‑connects, line groups, network elements).
- Provides excellent customer service and proactively educates and sells TDS products and services.
- Performs project management for system installations and related functions as requested.
- 2+ years technical telecommunications experience or current/prior military service with honorable discharge.
- 1+ year of basic fiber optic and/or copper cable splicing and repair, installation and repair, or switch training.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Follow TDS attendance guidelines.
- Complete customer‑specific requirements, including a background check.
- Available for on‑call/standby responsibilities and occasional travel; willing to work overtime.
- Pass all components of the Safety Course curriculum.
- Maintain DOT requirements for operating vehicles >10,000 lb GVRW.
