University Hospitals, in partnership with Lakeland Community College and Kent State University - Ashtabula (KSU-A), is offering a new Registered Nurse (RN) Apprenticeship program to obtain the education and skills needed to become an RN at UH Lake West and UH Tripoint Medical Centers.

RNs provide safe, efficient age‑specific nursing care to patients/families using the nursing process to assist them to attain, maintain, regain, and sustain optimal health status. The RN implements the nursing process by delivering effective relationship‑based nursing care, demonstrates technical skills in care delivery that result in safe practice and positive care outcomes, demonstrates clear communication and effective collaboration to optimize patient care and clinical operations, develops self and contributes to the professional practice of nursing and displays leadership that influences optimal clinical and operational outcomes.

This program will follow a milestone model where selected candidates will receive tiered bonuses as the candidate achieves certain milestones. The candidate will be hired into a Patient Care Nursing Assistant (PCNA) role with a minimum 24‑hour work commitment per 6‑week schedule period performing PCNA responsibilities (days/hours may vary).

• Assist with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs)
• Take vital signs
• Administer i’s and o’s
• Perform 12‑lead ECG
• Perform bladder scan
• Provide hygiene
• Venipuncture where applicable

PCNAs complete patient care activities as delegated by the RN and perform duties including, but not limited to, ADLs, vital signs, i’s and o’s, 12 lead ECG, bladder scan, hygiene and venipuncture where applicable.

The Lakeland Community College and KSU-A programs prepare students to obtain a Nursing Degree and sit for their NCLEX upon program completion to obtain licensure as an RN. Upon successful completion of the program and receipt of licensure, you will be promoted to a UH Medical‑Surgical RN with a 1‑year commitment at UH Lake West or UH Tripoint Medical Centers.
