Heavy Equipment Operator – Cleveland‑Cliffs, Willoughby, Ohio

Ferrous Processing and Trading (FPT) is one of North America’s premier processors, buyers, sellers, and recyclers of scrap metals of all kinds and is a key supplier to the metals industry of North America. FPT is a wholly‑owned business of Cleveland‑Cliffs and offers an immediate opportunity for a Heavy Equipment Operator to operate machinery for processing scrap metals using various tools and equipment such as crawlers.

• Ensure adherence to safety standards, including the use of required personal protective equipment (PPE), removal of hazards, and maintaining site cleanliness.
• Operate and maintain heavy equipment including wheeled crawlers, pedestal crawlers from manufacturers such as Caterpillar, Sennebogen, and Liebherr.
• Respond to hand signals or radio commands for equipment movement.
• Load and unload materials from storage, production areas, docks, delivery vehicles, staging areas, or containers using equipment such as magnets and grapples.
• Sort recycled materials to separate high‑grade metals and remove non‑conforming metals.
• Load balers and shredders using grapple or magnet.
• Operate and maintain mobile equipment such as forklifts, skid steers, manlifts, street sweepers, and water trucks.
• Use hand tools and power tools, including torches, banders, saw zalls, and wire snips.
• Perform daily inspections on all equipment as required.
• Identify scrap grade, type, and undesirable elements within material.
• Position trailers and containers around the yard and empty gaylord boxes as needed.
• Assist with cleaning duties related to plant equipment and housekeeping.
• Support mechanics in the maintenance of plant equipment.>
• Interact with customers or drivers to direct or assist them.
• Perform other tasks and operate and maintain equipment as required.

• At least 18 years of age.
• High School Diploma/GED or equivalent experience (≥1 year as a heavy equipment operator).
• Ability to read, write, and perform basic math.
• Ability to work independently.
• Good communication and interpersonal skills.
• Accurate record‑keeping skills.
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to climb ladders or steps.
• Ability to perform physical and outdoor work daily.
• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
• Cooperative teamwork with employees and public.
• Tolerance for dust, dirt, vibration, extreme climate, and weather changes.
• Pre‑employment background, physical, and drug screening required.
