Reporting To: Tree Working Foreman
Wages: G-5: $1,279.43 – $1,496.75/weekly
Hours: 6:30 AM – 3:00 PM, Monday – Friday

DEFINITIONManual arboricultural work and equipment operation of a skilled nature in the care and maintenance of Town‑owned trees, shrubbery, and roadside vegetation and all other related work as required.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS- Works under direct supervision of Tree Working Foreman, although intermittently assignments may be conducted under general supervision.
- May have to use independent judgement in operating equipment.
- Performs a variety of routine and repetitive tasks as a member of a crew on assigned locations.
- Errors could result in property damage and under certain conditions could jeopardize public safety.
- Performs manual work in assisting with the removal of town trees by operating brush chippers, stump grinders, bucket trucks, rigging ropes, and leverage devices.
- Hauls brush and logs, ensures crew mates have necessary tools for the job.
- May be asked to buck logs on the ground and prune or remove trees from an elevated bucket as experience and training allows, and as directed by Working Tree Foreman.
- Assists in planting town trees and shrubbery and ensuring trees and shrubs are properly watered.
- Mandatory participation in the Town’s snow and ice removal program by plowing snow and de‑icing roadways and parking lots, and removes ice and snow from walks, drives, and pavements.
- Actively participates in training activities offered.
- Complies with safety requirements of ANSI Z133 safety standards for tree care.
- Performs duties during regular work hours and during after‑hours emergencies, as needed.
- May service and follow prescribed preventative maintenance procedures on assigned equipment units.
- Operates Bobcats, drives trucks in all kinds of public works construction, maintenance and repair operations; loads, unloads and transports material, tools, supplies, equipment and workmen; operates a snowplow or sand spreader. Operates a brush chipper and stump grinder, may operate logging truck boom and bucket truck.
- Operates equipment such as small sidewalk rollers, compressors, chain saws, sidewalk sweepers, line painters and the like.
- Performs pick and shovel work in grading, patching or otherwise maintaining improved and unimproved streets; does rough work of excavating and sheathing trenches; excavates and backfills holes, trenches and ditches; spreads sand or stone chips by hand or mechanical spreader.
- Opens clogged sewers and catch basins, removes dirt and debris, and unstops lateral connections and traps.
- Performs work on ball fields, parks and playgrounds and cemetery.
- Performs a variety of unskilled tasks in connection with the physical maintenance of parking areas, streets and sewers; performs incidental unskilled manual laboring tasks as required.
- Other projects and duties as assigned.
Works under general supervision of the Tree Working Foreman. Makes some contact with the general public.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS- High School education or G.E.D.
- Qualifying experience in the operation of equipment, or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Knowledge of mechanics and operation of equipment.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License.
- Must possess and maintain an active Massachusetts Hoisting License, or ability to acquire one within six months.
- Working knowledge of public works equipment operations construction practices and maintenance procedures.
- Ability to perform heavy manual labor under varying and possible extreme weather conditions.
- Must be able to receive and comprehend verbal and written instructions appropriate to DPW construction and maintenance activities.
- Working knowledge of ANSI A300 arboriculture standards
