Psychiatrist; Addiction Medicine

Summary

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. Applicants must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit their EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval, including award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years), is determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services after review of the application.

Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet the basic requirements and any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Pending training or licensing requirements may be temporarily accepted, but employment is contingent upon meeting all requirements. Current VA-employed physicians who initially met qualification standards are deemed qualified.

Basic Requirements:

• U.S. Citizenship; non-citizens may be appointed only when qualified citizens cannot be recruited, in accordance with VA Policy.
• Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from an approved school.
• Current unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in the U.S.
• Completion of residency training approved by the VA, leading to eligibility for board certification. Approved residencies include ACGME, AOA, or other recognized programs with at least five years of verified practice in the U.S.
• Enrolled residents in approved programs may be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs), who must be fully licensed physicians, appointed on an intermittent or fee basis, and are not considered independent practitioners.
• Proficiency in English.
• Additional requirement:
  Certification in Addiction Psychiatry or Addiction Medicine, DEA Waiver to Prescribe Buprenorphine, and experience in treating Opioid Use Disorders.
• Preferred: ABPN Addiction Board Certification.
• Physical ability to perform all activities of the position, including standing, walking, stooping, bending, reaching, lifting, and climbing stairs.

Duties

• This is an open continuous announcement; qualified applicants will be referred weekly.
• Provide healthcare services to veteran patients at Fayetteville NC VA Coastal Healthcare System, including psychiatric evaluations, medication management, and collaboration with a multidisciplinary team for patients with complex/chronic pain and opioid use disorder.
• Refer patients for ancillary services and specialty care as appropriate, within VA policies.
• Perform clinical duties such as diagnosis, treatment planning, medication management, ordering tests, and documentation in CPRS.
• Prescribe medications in accordance with the formulary, with deviations only when clinically indicated.
• Serve as treatment and consulting psychiatrist on the Pain Management Clinic Team.
• Coordinate referrals and transfers with VA administrative staff, following approval protocols.
• Provide psychiatric consultation to other services and perform all duties within VA policies and Medical Staff By-Laws.
