Brief Summary of Work for this Position:

The Department of Biology and Marine Biology at The University of North Carolina Wilmington ((Use the "Apply for this Job" box below).) invites applications for two full-time lecturer positions. Successful candidates will teach introductory core curriculum courses as well as courses in our pre-health and pre-veterinary tracks. Applicants with expertise in microbiology or related areas are especially encouraged to apply, beginning in August 2026.

Successful candidates will be expected to take an active role in departmental service and may also develop additional courses and inquiry-based learning experiences, as determined by candidate interests, strengths and departmental needs. We are particularly interested in the candidate's ability to create a welcoming environment for students, staff, faculty, and community members.

These are renewable, non-tenure track positions with the possibility of promotion to senior lecturer/principal lecturer based on experience and performance. Lecturer positions are nine-month appointments with the opportunity to contribute to summer teaching for additional, competitive compensation.

The Department of Biology and Marine Biology has an excellent record of faculty development and mentorship and is committed to fostering new faculty to success.

Minimum

Education and Experience Requirements:
  • Ph.D. in Biology or a closely related field.

    Note:

    Applicants who are ABD for the terminal degree may be considered if the expected doctoral degree is conferred by August 1, 2026, to be eligible for employment.

Skills & Experience:
  • Demonstrated ability to teach introductory biology courses and courses in pre-health and pre-veterinary sciences.
  • Experience teaching microbiology or related courses.
  • Evidence of innovative and inclusive teaching practices that foster student engagement and success.
  • Experience developing inquiry-based learning experiences or contributing to curriculum development.

Primary Function of Organizational Unit:

The Department of Biology and Marine Biology supports an excellent undergraduate program, with an emphasis on hands‑on involvement of undergraduates in research and other applied learning activities. The department offers a Ph.D. in Integrative, Comparative and Marine Biology, and Master's programs in Biology and Marine Biology. Core facilities on campus and at the Center for Marine Science, located 6 miles from the main university campus, support research and education.

Faculty research spans molecular biology and bioinformatics, microbiology, developmental biology, coastal and estuarine ecology, invertebrate and vertebrate biology, and environmental biology. The department strives to train the next generation of scientists and educators, preparing all students to make sound judgments based on a solid foundation of biological principles. Teaching emphasizes current theories of biological science, basic investigative skills, and critical inquiry.

Research programs value investigations that impact the quality of life in the region and beyond. The department enhances the human condition and the environment through its expertise and fosters mutual respect and openness among students, faculty, staff, and the community.

Excellent support for research is provided in unique departmental facilities on campus such as the Oriole Burevitch Large Animal Necropsy Facility, UNCW Marine Mammal Stranding Program, and the Richard Dillaman Microscopy Facility. Resources at the Center for Marine Science include a DNA sequencing facility, mass spectrometry facility, nutrient analysis lab, high performance computing cluster, seawater systems, wet labs, a marine operations facility with five shops, a dock, and a fleet of research vessels ranging from 13 ft to a newly commissioned 73 ft vessel.

The Marine Biotechnology Center, Algal Resources Collection, and Shellfish Research Hatchery are collocated with CMS and support interdisciplinary research opportunities.
