Brief Summary of Work for this Position:
The Department of Communication Studies at the University of North Carolina Wilmington invites applicants for a nine‑month non‑tenure track lecturer position in digital media to begin August 2026.
This is a one‑year position that is renewable annually, contingent upon satisfactory performance, departmental needs, and the availability of funding.
Lecturer rank is expected to teach a 4/4 load. The teaching focus will be digital storytelling with an emphasis in field video and other forms of digital media production including podcasting. Opportunities to teach content‑focused courses such as media and society are also possible. Other responsibilities will include student mentoring and service to the department, campus, and community to be negotiated based on the strengths and desire of the candidate.
Opportunities to modify teaching load with signature projects may be possible dependent on candidate skills and experience. Summer teaching is an option.
Service commitments will be negotiated to foster professional enrichment for the candidate as well as meet the needs of the department. Examples include student mentoring, advising student organizations, and serving on relevant committees within the department and across campus.
Minimum
Education and Experience Requirements:
- MS, MA, or MFA in communication studies, media studies or closely related field at time of application
Preferred Education, Knowledge,
Skills & Experience:
- Adobe certification
- Demonstrated ability to teach applied learning and collaborations with community partners
- Desire to be advisor for student organizations
- Demonstrated ability to teach the use of current video and audio production equipment and uphold industry standards for production
- Secondary teaching and service areas that meet the needs of the department, university, and community.

The Department of Communication Studies is a large department within the College of Humanities, Social Sciences, and the Arts. We have 20 full‑time faculty who are methodologically diverse and embrace the breadth of the study of communication and our discipline's social science and humanities roots. The department serves approximately 500 majors in our BA program and 120 students in our MA program in Integrated Marketing Communication (IMC).
We share a commitment to praxis and applied learning. UNCW is an Adobe Campus with student support for the Adobe CC. The COM media area within the department is an award‑winning area of focus with national awards including Telly and BEA awards. Our digital creative facilities include a production studio, editing suite, newly renovated computer lab, planned maker space, and a robust inventory of industry‑current field video equipment and peripherals.

The department offers a B.A. in Communication Studies with a broad curriculum, including integrated marketing communication, media production, performance studies, interpersonal and organizational communication, and rhetoric and communication theory. The department also offers an M.A. in Integrated Marketing Communication and hosts a biennial IMC conference.
