Position Title

Assistant Professor of Spanish

Brief Summary

The Department of World Languages and Cultures at the University of North Carolina Wilmington invites applications for a full-time, nine-month, tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor of Spanish, with a specialization in Spanish for the Professions or Spanish for Specific Purposes, to begin August 2026.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will teach a 3-2 load, including courses related to Spanish in professional contexts, as well as undergraduate and graduate courses in their research field. The candidate will guide the Spanish program in developing curricula that prepare students to use Spanish in professional careers, including healthcare, legal studies, and business, among others. As a Carnegie R2 institution, UNCW values both teaching excellence and scholarly productivity.

The successful candidate will be expected to maintain an active research agenda and to contribute meaningfully to the intellectual life of the College of Humanities, Social Sciences and the Arts.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
  • Ph.D. in Spanish or a closely related field with at least 18 graduate credits in Spanish
  • Native or near-native proficiency in Spanish and English
  • Demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching
  • An active research agenda

Please note:

Applicants who are ABD for the terminal degree may be considered, however, if PhD is not confirmed by August 1, 2026, appointment will be at the rank of Lecturer for the first academic year of employment and PhD must be confirmed by July 1, 2027 for eligibility of continued employment.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience
  • PhD conferral on or before August 1, 2026
  • Experience developing and/or coordinating courses related to Spanish for professional settings or Spanish for Specific Purposes
  • Evidence of successful collaboration with faculty in professional programs to develop Spanish courses that are relevant for students wanting to learn Spanish for use in those fields
  • Experience liaising with community and industry partners with the goal of aligning the Spanish curriculum with their employment needs

  • List of 3 Professional references (if ABD), one of the references must be Dissertation Chair
