Position Summary

The Project Engineer III is responsible for designing safe, efficient, and cost‑effective vertical structures across a wide range of mid and low‑rise building types. This role involves advanced technical work, including load analysis, material and structural system selection, and preparation of detailed drawings and calculations to ensure compliance with building codes and project requirements. The position requires close collaboration with architects, owners, contractors, and other engineering consultants, as well as reviewing construction documents and conducting site visits to verify adherence to design specifications.

You will provide creative technical solutions to structural challenges while maintaining up‑to‑date knowledge of industry standards and best practices.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Lead structural design for complex projects with construction costs of $10M+.
  • Collaborate with architects, contractors, and other engineering teams throughout design and construction phases.
  • Conduct site visits to confirm compliance with design specifications and to resolve field issues.
  • Prepare detailed drawings, specifications, and calculations for structural systems.
  • Professionally seal documents completed by yourself or other engineers.
  • Accurately estimate engineering fees for assigned projects.
  • Demonstrate strong time management and project management skills to meet client expectations.
  • Effectively manage client relationships.
  • Handle high‑complexity projects with precision and efficiency.
  • Represent Stonewall Structural Engineering professionally in client meetings, both in‑person and virtually.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by your supervisor.
Education and Skills Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Structural Engineering or Civil Engineering (Master’s degree preferred).
  • Minimum 5 years of structural design experience.
  • Active North Carolina Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret building codes, technical procedures, and regulations.
  • Strong technical writing skills for reports and business correspondence.
  • Commitment to continuous learning, professional growth, and mentorship of fellow team members.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Proficient in interpreting technical instructions and managing abstract and concrete variables.
  • Expertise in design, modeling, and structural analysis software such as AutoCAD and/or Revit, Enercalc, and RISA3D or similar.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft 365 applications (Excel, Word, Outlook).

Physical Demands
  • Regularly required to sit and use hands for handling and feeling.
  • Frequently required to talk and listen; occasionally required to stand, walk, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities include close vision.
  • Site visits may require crawling through confined spaces or climbing through unfinished attics.

Eligible for hybrid work schedule.

Candidate must be within reasonable travel distance of Wilmington office location.
