Position DescriptionThe City of Wilmington is seeking a motivated and mission-driven Project Manager with a strong planning focus to lead transportation and mobility initiatives that shape how our community moves. This role is centered on safety, strategy, and long‑range vision, supporting Wilmington’s Vision Zero commitment by planning, coordinating, and delivering multimodal projects that make our streets safer, more accessible, and more connected.
TypicalTasks
- Lead the development of and updates to transportation plans, including Wilmington’s Vision Zero Action Plan, by coordinating cross‑departmental teams, setting performance goals, and preparing public‑facing reports and implementation strategies.
- Oversee all phases of project delivery—from planning and engineering analysis to permitting, bid preparation, construction oversight, and project closeout.
- Manage consultants, contractors, and project teams, ensuring work is on schedule, within budget, and consistent with City standards, contract requirements, and Vision Zero principles.
- Coordinate with internal departments and external partners, including NCDOT, regional agencies, utilities, neighborhood associations, and advocacy groups, to move projects forward efficiently and collaboratively.
- Facilitate community engagement, leading public meetings, responding to resident concerns, and clearly communicating project goals, timelines, and safety outcomes.
- Use data and safety analysis to inform decisions, including reviewing crash data, mobility trends, design alternatives, and performance metrics to prioritize improvements and support policy recommendations.
- Present project updates, milestones, and outcomes to City Council, the Planning Commission, and other committees as needed.
- Shape how residents, visitors, and commuters move across our city.
- Influence policies and projects that make walking, biking, and driving safer.
- Lead high‑visibility projects with real community impact.
- Help create a more equitable, healthy, and sustainable transportation future.
- Education:
Bachelor’s degree in Planning, Civil Engineering, Transportation Engineering, or a related field. - Experience:
At least three (3) years of relevant experience in project management, transportation planning, or mobility/safety infrastructure. - Skills:
Strong communication, coordination, and project delivery skills; passion for multimodal mobility, transportation safety, and community‑focused design. - Requirements:
Valid U.S. driver’s license. - Preferred:
Experience with Vision Zero, bike/ped design, grants, and/or certifications (P.E., AICP, PMP, PTP).
Exerting up to 10 lbs. occasionally or negligible weights frequently; sitting most of the time.
Working ConditionsThis position generally requires work in an office setting.
