Position: Radiation Protection Monitor (RPM)

Job Description Summary

The Radiation Protection Monitor (RPM) will provide radiation protection support for the radiation safety function at Global Nuclear Fuel – Americas (GNF-A), a commercial nuclear fuel manufacturing facility in Wilmington, NC. In this position, you will inspect and monitor nuclear fuel manufacturing operations involving radioactive and fissile materials. RPMs play a key role in assuring compliance with applicable licenses and regulations, including proper maintenance of radiation protection dose rate and contamination surveys, and radiation protection audit records.

RPMs take appropriate actions and make recommendations to ensure the health and safety of employees, the public, and the environment.

The schedule has not yet been determined for this position. It could be on either 1st shift or a rotational 4th shift depending on business needs. Candidates must be willing to work as needed. This position starts at $49/hour and after 6 months of satisfactory performance will increase to $49.66/hour. An additional hourly premium of $2 for work inside our Airborne Controlled Access area and a $1 premium for off‑shift hours are available.

In January 2026 the initial starting rate will increase to $50/hour. Candidates may be eligible for lump sum relocation assistance depending on proximity to the GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy site.

Essential Responsibilities
  • Know and understand the criticality safeguards criteria for the Wilmington Plant, based on operating license (SNM‑1097) and State of North Carolina licenses.
  • Perform visual inspections of all areas involving processing, handling or storage of uranium or activation/fission product radioactive materials; ensure conformity with nuclear safety criteria.
  • Monitor air concentrations of radioactive materials using continuous monitoring systems, high‑volume and special air samples; evaluate abnormal conditions, make recommendations and assist in rapid correction.
  • Review and document routine and special air sampling and monitoring data to determine personnel exposures and demonstrate regulatory compliance.
  • Monitor and inspect the discharge of liquid, solid and gaseous radioactive waste in accordance with environmental protection criteria and procedures.
  • Participate in the personnel dosimetry program, including database handling and documentation of dosimetry systems.
  • Survey potentially contaminated personnel, equipment and materials from controlled areas; perform decontamination surveys and represent the company at local hospitals when contamination accompanies injury.
  • Inspect radioactive materials to prevent hazardous storage or handling and avoid unnecessary waste, loss or diversion.
  • Report potential non‑compliance conditions and survey facilities to detect spread of uncontained radioactive materials to non‑controlled areas.
  • Inspect usage of protective clothing and equipment; advise on adequate protective clothing when respiratory protection is required.
  • Originate, establish and document radiation work permits and nuclear safety requirements for work involving potential exposure to radioactive materials.
  • Inspect, document and report survey and measurement results.
  • Coordinate with engineers and managers to analyze problems, incidents or data trends and draft or upgrade procedures and instructions.
  • Maintain surveillance of the Criticality Accident Alarm System; notify appropriate persons if a component fails or an unusual incident occurs.
  • Perform North Carolina State‑required surveys and audits of all X‑ray facilities and operations and the physical condition and usage of radioactive sources.
  • Source‑check radiation detection instruments on established schedules.
  • Perform radiation surveys of shipments and document DOT‑required shipping surveys.
  • Participate as first‑line re‑entry personnel during emergency situations; re‑enter the facility under the direction of the Emergency Response Organization and determine radiation levels.
  • Assist Radiation Protection management with training and qualification programs for others.
  • Perform other relevant duties as assigned.
