Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

The primary purpose of the Office of Institutional Research and Planning is to collect, maintain and provide official information about the University to meet both internal and external demands for mandated and ad-hoc requests while also monitoring policies and processes related to space utilization, assessment and accreditation compliance.

Both mandated and ad‑hoc requests can be internal (e.g., an Academic Department or Faculty Senate) or external (e.g., UNC System Office, US News and World Report, IPEDS, Military Times). The Office is considered a university‑wide resource and provides information to all departments within the organization. Strategically, the Office is charged with providing research expertise and strategies to study and measure issues within numerous areas on campus, including but not limited to enrollment management, enrollment budget planning, student success, space planning and management, and student, faculty and staff satisfaction and perceptions.

Institutional Research and Planning provides data literacy training on practical applications of UNCW strategic metrics, within a framework for making informed decisions and promoting workflow efficiency.

The Office is purposed to ultimately provide the Chief Executive, the Chief Academic Officer and other institutional senior leaders with timely, accurate and relevant research to positively impact policy decision‑making across the University.

Brief Summary of Work for this Position

The Data Analytics Specialist provides reporting, statistical analysis and visualizations that support strategic planning, student success tracking, enrollment management, accreditation, and federal and state compliance. The Specialist conducts robust statistical analysis using advanced techniques for data modeling, predictive analytics and cluster analysis. They lead efforts in reporting and analyzing data from National Student Clearinghouse and other datasets to inform decisions pertaining to student success metrics.

They publish data visualizations related to student retention, graduation, persistence and achievement, provide reports on student credit‑hour production for academic colleges and departments, serve on student‑success committees as needed, and deliver training and education to improve organizational data literacy and use of data.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (Data Analytics, Statistics, Computer Science, Information Systems, or related discipline) with a minimum of two years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. All degrees must be from appropriately accredited universities and colleges.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience
  • Master’s degree earned or in progress from an accredited institution in a relevant field.
  • Data Science experience.
  • Experience in higher education.
  • Expertise using report‑writing software such as SQL Server Reporting Services.
  • Expertise using SQL programming language in a SQL editor environment.
  • Experience with student information systems like Banner or Peoplesoft.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach and train administrators, faculty, staff, and students on subjects related to data science, analytics, and data literacy.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of statistical analysis tools (e.g., SAS and SPSS) as well as programming languages commonly used for data analysis (including Python and R).
